Dear Kenny, It seems we have dropped the ball on recruiting this year. Sorry to disappoint everyone but hey, We sure looked good last year. We are still ahead of Vanderbilt. I think.
I will look again and see. Thanks for your concern… Recruiting Staff 101
By Ron in Germany on Nov 12, 2009 @ 12:45pm
we weren’t that much better at this point last year. We’ll be okay. For example, we didn’t know about DD Jones, Brandon Mitchell, rudell crim, or anthony leon. We didn’t know if Ronnie Wingo or Cobi Hamilton was going to come for sure til late in the process.
I was just trying to highlight some of the higher ranked players. I think Brandon Mitchell was overlooked because of his basketball commitment to LSU, so that’s why I put him in there.
The point is that we are far from finished and will be okay in the end. We got spoiled last year with our D-back class ranking #1 and our overall great class. Just remember that most of the good news came at the end. There will be players flipping commitments, some good and some bad.
By MooMoo on Nov 12, 2009 @ 1:36pm
we will probably sign the fewest kids of any major D-1 college except for Ole Miss, obviously we arent going to have as many recruiting points, but 5-6 of our committs are a either 5.7 or 5.6 which is one point below a 4 star…..
By Zach on Nov 12, 2009 @ 1:38pm
The three players listed above on official visits this weekend are as good as any. They could play anywhere they want. If we could get those two to switch from Miami, that would really put a stamp on this class, and open the gates to Florida players.
By BigHogFan on Nov 12, 2009 @ 2:00pm
Im glad to see those guys coming! But I wanna know when is Bryan jones making a visit to the Hill Richard?… Or any D Lineman cause thats what we really NEED D LINEMEN!
By Rodney on Nov 12, 2009 @ 2:02pm
sorry Ron, we’re actually about 18-20 slots behind Vanderbilt in the rankings, but we’re ahead of ole miss, miss st., and Kentucky.

Why is everyone so worried about what Scout, Rivals, or ESPN rates our recruits? I trust CBP’s judgement on recruiting more than these so called “experts”! He is finding kids who fit the body/skill type we need on this team. Also remember we only won 5 games last year. That plays in directly with recruiting. We haven’t had a steller year this year as far as record is concerned either. We need to stop worrying about getting “stars” and worry about getting football players. We offered everyone of our current commitements a scholarship, which means that CBP seen something in them that he liked and wanted. I am very happy with this class and trust our coaching staff. The internet has “ruined” many hog fans. We for some reason feel we are more educated and a better judge of talent than one of the best coaches in college football. Let’s support our coaching staff!

Ethan, the most frustrating thing about it is while you are 100% correct, some people get so hung up on ratings and rankings they think they know more than the coaching staff. I whole-heartedly agree with you. If Petrino was careless or had no idea how to recruit, we would have 20 “low-rated” recruits. He has been extremely selective with the remaining spots as he was last year. Close to signing day, he filled those spots with the likes of Wingo, Crim, Leon, Jones, and Davis.
15 of our 32 commits from last year committed in December or later. Davis commited early then opened is back up only to recommit. 9 of those 15 commits either start or are in the regular rotation. Their rankingas as recruits varied from 2 stars (Colton Nash) to 4 stars (Ronnie Wingo) and everywhere in between.
I have full faith in the coahcing staff and their recruiting methodology.

BigHogFan,
According to Rivals it is:
51 Arkansas ….. 341 Points
53 Vanderbilt … 333 Points
74 Kentucky ….. 81 Points

what is our chances with these guys.
By im just saying on Nov 12, 2009 @ 3:37pm
What’s going on guys. I am alive.
Things have been looking good for the football team. Not so much for the basketball team.
I am a Featured Columnist now for the Bleacher Report writing about Arkansas Basketball. I write a lot on the football team also.
If you all get a chance just check out my profile and articles or you can just go to the Bleacher Report and you will see them on any of the Arkansas Pages and usually on the SEC pages and college football and basketball pages as well.
Give them a read and give me feedback if you all get a chance.

Blake I’ve missed you on here. You always seem to have informed rational things to say. I’ve been reading your stuff on Bleacher Report the last couple weeks. Good stuff. Welcome back!
By Ethan on Nov 12, 2009 @ 4:08pm
Ethan whats going on?
A big recruiting weekend for the Hogs. Lucas, Davis, and Nelson are some great players. A lot of other good ones visiting as well.
I hope we make a move with those three on their officials visits. It would be nice to have Florida teammates commit for the second time in three weeks!
By Blake on Nov 12, 2009 @ 4:23pm
Idiots is what some of you are. We are signing a small a class. Have a few unrated commits. a 2 star kicker. Thats why we are low. I swear my computer screen is smarter then some of you people. Ron in Germany and Kenny what university do you coach at. I expect it is a big time school as you claim to know more then our staff.
By Hog_fan on Nov 12, 2009 @ 4:30pm
Hogs recruiting is filling needs. When a class is focused on OL and DL do not expect to see a high rating.
That’s my take on it.
By Blake on Nov 12, 2009 @ 4:42pm
Nice call Blake. If we counted on scouts and rivals to tell us how good our team is gonna be, we would never get very far and USC would be on a 500 game winning streak and Boise State would be looking for their first win since September. Signing day is in February and its early November, chill out everybody. This is not the year for skill players, its about the big boys that work in the trenches, and as Blake said, their ratings don’t help us get in the top 25 in recruiting. We are building strength with depth. Go Hogs Go!!!
By hurtkiley on Nov 12, 2009 @ 5:18pm
Yeah I agree Blake it seems we’re recruiting based on the needs of our team. I’ll sit back and watch a youtube video or 2 of the kids we’re recruiting and that’s about it… No reason to get all into the stars and ratings. Let them do what they do (coach)… And I’ll do what I do (cheer)….

Oh and I hope these kids like the visit…
We can use all the help we can get!
By blu3tick on Nov 12, 2009 @ 5:24pm
I agree with filling needs. The thing I am encouraged by is the size of the recruits we have coming in. As a team we are getting Bigger, Faster, and Stonger! We have great depth right now at WR and RB. We have a very deep class of instate talent at the skill position next year. That is when we need to address those needs.
Also we need to keep in mind that we have these kids for 4 years. It’s upside, potential, and most importantly coachability that needs to be looked at while evaluting recruits. You can have tons of 4 and 5 star recruits, but without the ability to get the most out of the kids it’s a waste. Look at what Houston Nutt has done with all of those great recruiting classes that Coach O brought in. Again we don’t need to worry about “stars”! Worry about football players!
By Ethan on Nov 12, 2009 @ 5:28pm
I posted last week with the same idea that when you get linemen your recruiting ratings are low. we need o line and d line help even if we get a couple high rated skill players like lucus our numbers will be low because of the need to have quality linemen to step in and play.
By Elery Dendy on Nov 12, 2009 @ 5:36pm
Be patient…..we are filling a class with meat and potato guys this year. There will not be to many glamour 4-5* recruits.
By Josh on Nov 12, 2009 @ 5:44pm
Not sure who you are to be calling people idiots, Hog_fan. My 2 year old niece could put sentences together better than you, along with proper grammar. Now, please don’t ask where my niece teaches because I can already tell she’s smarter than you and your computer screen.
Sorry for the name calling, but I have faith in my coaches. They’re the ones getting paid to bring in the players that fit into their system. Luckily for them, they don’t listen to some people on here and do their job the way that has made them successful.
By razorpride89 on Nov 12, 2009 @ 5:51pm
I gotta disagree with you guys who say the recruiting rankings will be lower because of Linemen. On the Rivals top 250 there are 85 linemen with either a 4 or 5 star rating. That’s 35% of the total players with a 4 or 5 star rating.

Hey Blake, long time.
By Ron in Germany on Nov 12, 2009 @ 6:05pm
Normally, I would be worried as well, but I’ve been keeping up with this year’s commited recruits, and I have to admit that I find it hard to complain.
We have several that aren’t even rated, and for some reason, I believe they’ll be a couple that rate higher after their Sr. seasons.
Our program also seems to be set up much differently than what it was in the past, which makes me want to believe that a couple of the DTs we’ve recruited will become much bigger in the future with the kind of strength and conditioning coach we presently have with Jason Veltcamp.
DT is currently our greatest concern, and if we’re able to land a couple of more good ones, I think our 2010 class will be just fine.
By GonzoHog on Nov 12, 2009 @ 6:05pm
You can ad to that list if you include JUCO. In the top 50 there are 21 Linemen. That’s 42% of the top JUCO players.
By Ron in Germany on Nov 12, 2009 @ 6:12pm
It seems we are limiting our recruits in several areas…running back, wide receivers, quarterbacks…and we are loading up on linebackers, offensive linemen and Defensive ends…am I wrong or what?
By hog fan in florida on Nov 12, 2009 @ 6:32pm
I have said several times it looks like we are behind. I think CBP has got a limited number of player he can recruit, do to our high number last year. I think he is being very selective, in getting the best players for his system and the needs we have. I believe that we will see some big time recruits sign before it is all said and done.
By tomt58 on Nov 12, 2009 @ 6:49pm
I was hoping to see Joseph DT from La and Williams DT from Tx on this list for a visit. Isn’t this the last game we can bring them in?
By Jackflash on Nov 12, 2009 @ 7:53pm
We can bring them in the Little Rock game next weekend.
By Ron in Germany on Nov 12, 2009 @ 8:01pm
Hog fan in Fla, you are absolutely correct. When you don’t recruit as many “skill” players, your recruiting ranking will not be as good. He is basically adding where the need areas are. You can bet last year’s class was Top 10 if the National services said it was Top 20. And, next year’s class will be off the charts.
By Ima Hawg on Nov 12, 2009 @ 9:07pm
Instead of recruiting all of these “skill” players We NEED D Lineman!, or in a couple of years we are gonna be Like Baylor! You have to have a GOOD D LINE in the SEC!
By Rodney on Nov 12, 2009 @ 10:59pm
i want to land the darryl fields RB from OK
Scout recently ranked him #5 in the OK top 25 taking into account their senior season. Bennett #6 Gaston #19
List also makes me wish we could land Barnett and Cobbs

NO more OL, WRs, unless the Liberty, Mo kid. No more TE’s (we have Nash for the future). DL! DL! DL! DL! LB! DL! LB! etc….
By Matt on Nov 13, 2009 @ 11:14am
I believe Nash will be moved to DE next year.
By MRPRFCT on Nov 13, 2009 @ 11:36am
I reviewed the Defensive linemen already on campus…what is up wtih Lavunce Askew and the others? They came in pretty touted…are they not making the grade per se?
By Razorback Roger in Florida on Nov 13, 2009 @ 1:18pm
Well I hope Mr. Askew isn’t another Fred Bledsoe either!…But for right Now we have D.D. Jones who is a future ALL SEC player and Zach Stadther is pretty good. But CLEARLY Bobby needs to focus on that Glaring NEED!…
By Rodney on Nov 13, 2009 @ 1:53pm
askew made some plays in the SC game i do believe
By PK on Nov 13, 2009 @ 5:36pm
One should really look into how many schools are now shying away from the major ranking systems (Rivals/Maxprep,etc.) and look at the schools who are focusing more on having their scouts and coaches in the stands viewing the kids in person. Many coaches found that the evaluation systems were indicators, but real time game action is where the rubber meets the road, and thats were many coaches are finding how well a player can fit into their scheme of play. Several ACC schools have found that many of their previous recruits were ranked high on the rating systems, and looked good on highlight tapes, but once signed and suited up, many did not progress as well as anticipated. Several of the schools now mandate that position coaches try as much as possible to evaluate in person the players that they will have to develop before offering them a scholarship. Lesson here, do not put much weight on evaluation points, but focus more on what type of player can benefit the system which you install on game day. Petrino has a plan and in order to execute that plan he must recruit the type of players that can get it done. I have been to several of the games this year and am familiar with most of the recruits that have been to the games, and let me tell you the best is yet to come if they decide to play at Arkansas.

Have you covered any of the unofficial recruits to Fayetville this year? Several players from the metro LR area have been invited to all the games that I do not see you mentioning in your articles. For example, probably the two best linebackers in the state are juniors ( the kid from Jonesboro and the kid from LR Parkview). I do not see much mentioned on their status and how they could help the Hogs. Defense is our main weakness, and I am sure Petrino has some hands on these two players by now. Give a little attention to the few players that can play D1 ball from our state. Just a thought….
