That is really good news on Barnett. When he makes is official visit to AR I think he will love it and see how much he could really help the Hogs D. We need this guy on the D line next season with Sheppard on the way out.

I want Jones from Junction City. I hope we get that Collins kid. He reminds me of those Florida gator backs. We could use a waterbug on this team.
By MRPRFCT on Aug 21, 2009 @ 10:53am
Yeah I think Collins and Hill are those top of Florida style backs/WRs.
I agree I really want us to land Jones.
I see our recruiting taking shape right now while I know many wanted to panic. When you look across the board at all the great recruits style uncommitted and then you look at all the schools with 20 commits already. There really is going to be some schools passing on players because of needs, and also there will be players passing on schools because their position has 1 or 2 or more players signed committed already. Also the season has not even started so winning some games and showing what this new system is really all about could help in a huge way. Look what the win over LSU did for us last year? In a losing season we signed a top 20 class and I would have to accredit a lot of that to our season ending win.

When can the coaches start seeing the gentlemen they are recruiting again?
By HawkHog on Aug 21, 2009 @ 11:41am
I hope we pass on getting qb this year and focus on defensive studs.
By B~Dubz on Aug 21, 2009 @ 12:56pm
I don’t see Youngblood sticking around for 4 years so I hope we skip the QBs this year and sign Allen and Frazier next year. I really am not excited about battling Western Kentucky and Iowa State for a QB.
By MRPRFCT on Aug 21, 2009 @ 1:01pm
Yeah, I agree with you B~Dubz. With the talent we have right now in Mallett, Wilson, Youngblood, and Mitchell, along with walkons, combined with the coaches wanting both Allen and Frazier next year, it seems that a QB for this class would get lost in the mix unless he was REALLY special. However, I guess there could be a worst case scenerio where Mallett declares for the draft after this season, Youngblood decides to play baseball, and Mitchell or Wilson gets hurt. Does anyone remember when Nutt and co. went and got John Rutledge off the intramural team several years back because injuries and other things decimated the QB depth?

You make a good point SAHF. Gotta take care of now and let the future play out.

• Arkansas has a new tight end. Jim Youngblood slipped over from his quarterback spot and worked at the position throughout today’s practice. I got to talk to running backs coach Tim Horton afterward and he said Arkansas wants to get a good look at Youngblood at the position. He added that the goal is to find a way to get players on the field and Youngblood’s best chance could be at tight end.
• RB Broderick Green missed another practice, but there might be a good sign. Horton said the big back was able to attend meetings before Friday’s practice. However, he has had a high temperature most of the week and Horton believes it was at 103 yesterday. Unfortunately for Green, he’s missing tomorrow’s scrimmage which is expected to be a big one for the Hogs. Will it affect his status in the rotation?
• Arkansas’ secondary was the beat up group today. S Anthony Leon did not practice once again because of an injury. CBs Rudell Crim and David Gordon — who have been second-team guys — also sported yellow, non-contact jerseys. Crim said he has a neck stinger and is avoiding contact for now, but should be OK. With Crim and Gordon limited, Andru Stewart and Darius Winston jumped up to second team.
• Safety Jerell Norton also turned in a pretty impressive play when he stepped in front of Joe Adams to intercept a Tyler Wilson pass during team drills. Norton was moved to the position a few days ago and is working with the second-team defense while Leon is out. He’s stating a case to stay there, too.
• If you blinked you might’ve missed this: RB De’Anthony Curtis was over in line with the receivers during the early part of practice, getting in some drill work. At first, I thought maybe Curtis had moved, but he did take his place back with the running backs later on. I asked Horton about it and he said the Razorbacks think they might be able to use him as a “combo, running back/receiver type player.” They wanted to get him some work there to see how it looks. We’ll keep an eye on it tomorrow.

I think it’s good that the coaches believe the QB depth is good enough to at least give Youngblood a good look at the TE position.
If this turns out to be a permanent move, I wonder just how much of a difference it’ll make with the decision making of the new QB recruits, Trickett and Medlock?
Trickett could very well turn out to be another Tyler Wilson type QB.
Wilson’s only downfall as a prospect was his size, which probably kept him from rating a 4 star prospect.
I see Trickett as being much the same mold.
If we sign this kid, he could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
By GonzoHog on Aug 22, 2009 @ 4:49am
Youngblood was quick to commit. He offered encouragement to other recruits. He is a real Razorback at heart. If he is not in sight of PT as a QB, the coaches must give him an opportunity at another position. With our injury luck at TE, this may well be that opportunity.
By bigfoot on Aug 22, 2009 @ 8:37am
Wilson was rated a 4star
By blake on Aug 22, 2009 @ 11:29am
Yeah, Wilson was a 4 star. He was a 3 star to start his senior year and HS. He was rated around 17th best prostyle QB in the nation. He steadily moved up the rankings, up to 12th and was granted his 4th star. Then in the final rankings he was further moved up to 9th in the nation! Shame on you Gonzo! Being from Bulldog country and all….
By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Aug 22, 2009 @ 12:47pm
Sorry SAHF, I guess i’m just used to looking at scout’s recruiting service more often than Rivals. I don’t believe he moved up that much on their chart.
regardless, for some reason, I just think Trickett may be cut from that same mold.
He certainly tore up all the camps he attended.
I’m sure that didn’t happen because he got lucky. The kid must have some talent.
Also, I think Coach Petrino and the coaching staff tend to lean towards these kinds of players. They’re smart, coachable, and a little bit under-recruited for their talents.
As good a QB coach as Petrino is, he’ll make a 3 star recruit into a 5 star before he’s through with him.
By GonzoHog on Aug 23, 2009 @ 11:34am
Its ok Gonzo. I was just giving you a hard time!
By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Aug 23, 2009 @ 11:41am
Hey SAHF,
I’ve been checking out this years Bulldog team a little bit, and it looks like it could turn out to be another banner year.
We have some really hungry Srs. coming back, and 2 really strong classes right behind them with the Jrs. and Sophs. Their loaded.
Both the Jr. and Soph. classes hardly even knew what losing was while in Jr. high. They never experienced it.
By GonzoHog on Aug 23, 2009 @ 12:06pm
Yeah Gonzo, Arkansas Varsity has Greenwood ranked #1 in 5A. I don’t see any reason why they can’t win yet another state title this year. After falling short last season, I would bet the seniors are hungry to get back to the top. With that Shook kid returning at QB and Harris and others at WR, the Bulldogs offense should be outstanding as usual. I think having a season under his belt will make Shook a great QB this year.
By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Aug 23, 2009 @ 3:39pm
I had heard recently that Shook did some growing over the summer and looked like he was up to about 6′0″ or 6′1″.
I watched him walk past me the other day after practice and I have to say the rumors are not true at all.
He was listed at 5′10″ last season, but i’d be suprised if he’s one centimeter over 5′11″ right now.
It doesn’t really matter though. I think their going to have a great season.
By GonzoHog on Aug 23, 2009 @ 7:31pm
Is Shook a junior?
By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Aug 23, 2009 @ 7:38pm
I was under the impression he was, SAHF, but the Ft. Smith area news did a recent story on the team’s up coming season and they were calling him a SR. QB.
Also, in an interview, Shook stated that he and fellow teammate and Sr. WR Spencer Harris had been playing together since the 3rd grade, which made me think they were in the same class, so from that information, i’m assuming now that he’s a Sr.
By GonzoHog on Aug 23, 2009 @ 7:59pm
Thanks Gonzo. He should be just fine, regardless of his height or lack thereof. Returning senior starters at QB up there almost always have banner seasons.
