Wanted: Tarik Black
July 3, 2009 – 6:17 pmArkansas is known to be recruiting several players from the talented Memphis Magic AAU team including power forward Tarik Black.
Black, 6-8, 236 of Memphis (TN) Ridgeway has approximately 20 scholarships including one from Arkansas.
Black, who has a 3.0 grade point average and wants to major in sports medicine in college, spoke to Razorback assistant coach Tom Ostrom after attending CDC Disease Detective Camp in Atlanta last week.
“He was telling me that they really wanted me,” Black said. “He said the scholarship is on the table if I’m ready to take it. He was asking me about the science camp and he was saying it was a good experience and most top players wouldn’t be at a science camp.”
Black said he averaged about 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 or 2 blocks a game last season.
Black can be dominating, according to Van Coleman of Hoopmasters.com
“He’s monster when he wants to be,” Coleman said. “When he’s motivated, he rebounds as well as anyone in the 2010 class. He can block shots and really runs the floor well. He has played his way into being one the top 50 players nationally.”
Black said he’s unsure if he’ll attend any elite camps later in the summer because he found out earlier this week that he may have a torn meniscus in his left knee.
“The doctor told me if I decide to keep playing that I’ll have to play with some pain or I can have surgery.” Black said.
Black said he would have about two weeks of rehab if he decides to have surgery.
He said he’s open to all schools and doesn’t favor anyone and plans to narrow his list down sometime in August and plans to sign next spring.

These are the kinds of PFs Pelphrey likes in his system.
A guy who’s 6′8″, 236 lbs. is no pushover on the boards, and if he has the ability to block shots and run the floor as well, you have a chance to really shine with PGs/SGs like Fortson and Clarke, while sharing time with a guy like Powell.
The key for Pelphrey right now is to gain an edge with depth. If you move R.Clarke over to the point on a part time basis, 2 years from now, when Peterson becomes eligible, you have 3 quality Players capable of playing the point. If you sign Mickelson for the 2011 class, you have 3 quality PFs to work with, plus Bordan as a Center/PF. Sign Ross at the SF position, and hopefully you have another SF capable of backing up Jason Henry and Bryant. (If Jason’s still around)
If the big SG works out well we’re getting from Jr. college this season, and we can actually land all these players, I think our program has a chance to really sucseed from here on out.

Scholarships will become a problem when the magical class out of Arkansas is ready to choose a college.
I guess Pelphrey is planning on more people leaving the program, which will not help with the points we need for the ncaa.
However, I am all for Pelphrey signing top recruits when he can land them.
