Florida DT looks to visit Hogs

July 3, 2009 – 6:22 pm

Defensive tackle Matt Stokes of Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas reports receiving an offer from Arkansas. He also has an offer from Liberty and is receiving interest from interest Rutgers, UCLA, Michigan State, Oregon, Purdue, Miami of Ohio, Toledo and others.

Stokes, 6-2, 250, 4.8 doesn’t have much knowledge about the Razorback program.

“I want to learn more about the school and visit it and meet the coaches,” said Stokes, who reports a 325-pound bench press and 425 squat. “I know they’re in the SEC and they didn’t do too well last year but they had a good season the previous year.”

Last season was Stokes first year to play at defensive tackle but he recorded 25 tackles and 5 sacks.

Like most recruits, Stokes has done research on the internet.

“I’ve looked at their roster and signing class from last year and I read up on some of the coaches and got a general idea about the place,” Stokes said. “I looked at their site and looked at the campus and their facilities.”

Stokes excels in the classroom with a 4.22 GPA. He hopes to study business or physiology in college.

He hopes to make it up for the Georgia game for an official visit.

“Our second bye week, I’m going to try and come up to Arkansas and visit the campus,” Stokes said. “I haven’t talked to them yet but I’m going to call them and let them know.”

  1. I’ve noticed lately that the coaching staff has been offering scholorships to DT prospects in the range of 6′2″, 250 to 260 lbs.
Their 40 speed always seems to be good, and their academics are rarely in question.
Florida recruits, altogether, seem to be high on the list as well. Possibly because even the ones overlooked by the major Florida Universities are still good quality recruits.
Also, I believe Petrino has a lot of confidence in strength coach Jason Veltcamp, and is relying on him to push these recruits up to the 290 to 300 lb. mark if they are signed.
I believe there’s a plan in the works at the DT position, and Petrino is just the guy to make it work with his old school work ethic.

Some schools use a 5 point scale and others grant extra points for an A+ or Advanced Placement (AP) courses. At any rate, a fine student.

  4. He really sounds like a good recruit. Calvin Barnett is at the top of my list for DTs this year, I have a good feeling he could become a razorback.

  5. I hope Calvin becomes a hog and his teammate also. I want them both. Both are tops at their positions.

  6. Don’t forget the super strong Jones kid from Junction City. He is a must-get IMO.

  7. MRP I know. I wonder why Jones recruiting has been so quiet. The Hogs have really been after him the most from what I have read. I think he is still waiting and hoping for that LSU offer.

  8. Also the other DL that we have a very good shot on is 4 star Jordan Allen down in LA. He likes LSU alot but we have been recruiting him longer and harder I believe. He has us as one of his top schools so we will have to wait and see if we can nab him away from LSU. He looks like a sound and very smart football player who would be a great get for us.

Any news on the highly rated NC DL that had connections to our program through a staff member. Has committed somewhere else or narrowed his list?
