A couple tidbits

July 3, 2009 – 6:28 pm

RB/LB Braylon Mitchell of Heber Springs visited Arkansas on Thursday and is expected to make a decision  next week.

Offensive lineman Jarvis Gray has moved from Earle to West Memphis for more exposure and  hopes of gaining a scholarship offer.

“I made the decision the last couple weeks of school,” Gray said. “I’ll get a better opportunity at West Memphis.”

Gray, 6-6, 330, 5.2 hopes to attend senior camps at Arkansas, Mississippi and Memphis this month.

    Is this a reprint of 2 weeks ago ? ;) Just checking ! :P

  2. Jarvis Gray’s 40 time seems to be pretty solid, considering the weight he’s carrying on that 6′6″ frame.
Transferring to West Memphis could turn out to be a pretty good move.

  3. It does sound familiar–

  4. So much for going to asu to tell the coaches to their faces that he’s committing to Arkansas. Sounds like the kid hasn’t quite made up his mind yet. So his he going to visit asu again to tell the coaches he’s committing to Arkansas or was this recent visit to Arkansas him telling our coaches that he’s sticking with his asu commitment?

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 4, 2009 @ 9:01am

  5. This is a big decision for Mitchell and his family. They obviously want to think it through. February is a long time from now.

    By MC on Jul 4, 2009 @ 9:36am

  6. Maybe he’s just getting a second look at the UofA before he decides. (sound wisdom)

    By GonzoHog on Jul 4, 2009 @ 1:37pm

  7. I thought he already made his decision and that was the reason he visited asu, so he could tell the asu coaches to their faces like you guys were saying.

  8. Richard, I heard that Anthony Oden was cleared and will be reporting to campus very soon. Is this true?

    By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jul 4, 2009 @ 6:45pm

  9. I hope so, SAHF.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 4, 2009 @ 7:45pm

  10. Me too MRP! Not trying to put too much on him before he ever suits up, but he has the talent to possibly be a tackle the caliber of Shawn Andrews. Hope he plays up to his potential!

    By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jul 4, 2009 @ 7:52pm

  11. Imagine Oden and Berna lined up next to each other.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 4, 2009 @ 10:13pm

  12. So you mean Gray didn’t go to a Private school that recruits? Instead he is “transferring” to a successful Public school?

    By Ima Hawg on Jul 4, 2009 @ 10:18pm

  13. I didn’t know Earle had a private school

By Ron in Jordan on Jul 4, 2009 @ 11:21pm

  14. These are the DOG DAYS pf simmer, very little news woth repeating.

My thought process says that on the average, we are one touchdown per game better than we were on offemse this fall, and one touchdown better on defense than we were last year. That would cause me to be optimistic for the season.

While we have Malltet with some Big 10 experience, we do not have a PROVEN QB with time under center. That creates concern.

    By bigfoot on Jul 4, 2009 @ 11:22pm

  15. RIJ, so many are upset that Shiloh, PA, CAC, and others attract players to their program that they must be recruiting. Here is a guy going to West Memphis to gain more “exposure” at a Public School”. Of course, happens all the time. Much more than Private schools. Earle does have a Private school…apparently so Private that Gray doen’t think he’ll get noticed there!

    By Ima Hawg on Jul 5, 2009 @ 7:53am

  16. I’m with ‘ya bigfoot.
I’m pretty confident with the potential of Mallett and Wilson somewhere down the road, but that potential still has to be developed first.
I do believe our QBs proverbial light will come on at some point in the season, but when? Not to even mention the O-line will have to be much improved for those two kids to develope at a solid pace.
Our toughest tests will come early to mid-season, so that has me a bit concerened.
The A&M game will be played in a foreign stadium on national television, ‘Bama’s an away game, Florida is away, and Ole Miss is away.
That’s not even including Georgia at home in the 2nd game of the season.
As crazy as it sounds, we can much improve as a team and still lose all of those games.
If all of these games turn out to be close, let’s keep our fingers crossed we can pull off a couple of ‘em.
Personally, I’d be very satisfied if we could go 2-3 over that stretch of the season.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 5, 2009 @ 7:56am

  17. I still believe the Georgia game is key.
If we could pull off a win in that one, our young players will start believing in themselves early. Confidence is everything.

  18. Very good point, Ima Hawg.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 5, 2009 @ 9:32am

  19. Is Braylon Mitchell the one that Trey Biddy said is such a hitter on defense and for the most part unblockable?

    By shawn on Jul 5, 2009 @ 12:32pm

  20. Shawn, I believe Trey was referring to Antonio Harding, a LB from Warren.

    By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jul 5, 2009 @ 1:48pm

  21. You’re right, SAHF.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 5, 2009 @ 2:27pm

  22. Are we recruiting him? I havent heard much on him. I guess Braylon really impressed the coaching staff at the camp for them to offer him over some of the higher rated LB’s out of state we could have went after.

    By shawn on Jul 5, 2009 @ 2:53pm

  23. Hey, BTW fellow Hog fans, I read on the Razor’s Edge that Braylon Mitchell will committ to the Hogs on Wednesday. The person who posted it said that Braylon told him this. Not trying to spread a rumour, as the person appears to be a reliable source. Also read that Oden is on his way or should already be in Fayetteville!

    By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jul 5, 2009 @ 2:57pm

  24. From what I have read and heard Shawn, Harding is probably the best LB in the state and has 4 star talent. I read that he is trying to catch up on academics in summer school, and if he gets his grades and such in order, he should get several bigtime offers as the season progresses. Most believe he is a better prospect than his teammate Eldon Thompson, who is rated among the top 20 inside LBs by Rivals.

    By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jul 5, 2009 @ 3:03pm

  25. Also, Hawgsports has him rated the #7 prospect in the state as of now. He stands a very good chance of moving up higher in the ratings as the season progresses.

    By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jul 5, 2009 @ 3:06pm

  26. I heard it was grades also.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 5, 2009 @ 3:16pm

  27. I wonder what Braylon did at camp that was so impressive? It looks like we are going after these 6′2 210lb guys that run sub 4.6 for our linebacker position.

    By shawn on Jul 5, 2009 @ 7:03pm

  28. jason henry will no longer be apart of the arkansas basketbal team. major blow…

    By david on Jul 5, 2009 @ 10:36pm

  29. I’m glad it’s over with.
I believe Henry’s had plenty of time to get everything in order.
I hope Pelphrey’s learned his lesson with the questionable academically/pitifully disaplined recruits/supposed NCAA rules violators.
There were super-high expectations for Pelphery’s first real recruiting class, but as it turned out, Fortson and Clarke are now the only ones remaining from the group.
Let’s all hope this is the final end of having our recruits/players not panning out.
It began with Daniel Payne not being able to sign with the Hogs because of his grades. Then, Montrell McDonald was recruited and added to the list to replace Payne.
Patrick Beverly then commited a cheating blunder and was released from the team last summer.
The season started, Montrell McDonald couldn’t see things Pelphery’s way after a few games, then chose to take the hiway instead.
Then, after gaining eligible status and contributing far more than any of us really expected, Marcus Monk screwed the pooch with secondary NCAA violations, causing us to lose him also.
All the while, Henry is back and forth with disapline issues, mostly because of his lack of interest in attending class.
After the season was over, Brandon Moore and Andre Clark didn’t seem to be developing as planned, so after a little spring recruiting, they were let go as well.
Now, here we are again, finally cutting the cord on a talented, but very risky and undisaplined recruit from that same class. Possibly the most talented of the group.

Can we please start building a basketball team now!? (frustrated)

  30. with discipline.

  31. I heard Braylon Mitchell is visiting asu Tuesday to tell the coaches that he for sure is committing to Arkansas this time.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 6, 2009 @ 10:45am

  32. That is great news about the lb from warren. i hope he gets those grades in order.

Warren is such a talent pipeline. Seems like they can average a least a player or more to the Hill every year.

    By Razorback56 on Jul 6, 2009 @ 10:49am

  33. What are antonio harding’s measurables?

    By Razorback56 on Jul 6, 2009 @ 10:56am

  34. Razorback56,

    Last I heard, he was 5′11″, 215 lbs., and runs a 4.6 – 40.
Comments made on him by Trey Biddy were that he was very aggresive to the ball, sheds blocks very well, and has a good change of direction.
If he can defend the pass, it sounds like he may be a good candidate to be recruited for the SS/Hybrid OLB position.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 6, 2009 @ 11:13am

  35. I not one to down a person just based on measurables, but on the surface it appears he may be a step slow to play DB and a hair small for Linebacker. which i guess would technically make him a hybrid/tweener which is the position you mentioned. it could work out.

i just know that we want to get long on defense. and the only position i wouldn’t mind being under 6 foot is cornerback. not sure about a linebacker.

but then of course you have your butu’s, etc.

what does his offer sheet look like right now?

    By Razorback56 on Jul 6, 2009 @ 11:53am

  36. That, I couldn’t tell you, Razorback56.
If I recall right, some of the smaller local colleges were on him pretty good, but if the latest evaluations on him were accurate, it’s been said by Trey that he’ll be getting a lot more offers from some of the bigger football programs soon.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 6, 2009 @ 12:11pm

  37. on an unrelated note, that mess that happened to steve mcnair is pretty messed up.

that’s a crappy way for a nice guy (on the surface) to go out.

but when you get wrapped up in sin you have no clue how fast it can take you out. i haven’t seen the movie, but it reminds me of the film that just came out called ‘Obsessed’ w/ Beyonce.

Looks like that’s about what happened.

  38. Everyone should call their senators and demand they vote AGAINST CAP AND TRADE!!!!!

  39. MRP, you don’t know crap about Sports. But you amaze me at your Political acumen. You are absolutely right!!!

  40. LOL!!!! I have same opinion about you!!!! Bwahahahaha!!!!! Just kidding

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 6, 2009 @ 2:56pm

  41. Good point, Ima Hawg. We should seek more perfection out of our daily political issues.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 6, 2009 @ 5:21pm

  42. I really like the idea of Brad Hefley playing middle linebacker…can you see a QB trying to see over that guy…and he has from what I understand a mean streak on the field. Gotta love it…we need them big, tall and mean on defense.

By hog fan in florida on Jul 6, 2009 @ 5:37pm

  43. Ok gonzo, are you for or against cap and trade?

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 6, 2009 @ 8:26pm

  44. I doubt Hefley plays MLB for us.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 6, 2009 @ 8:27pm

  45. I’m not FOR anything, if it has something to do with the current politics in the United States.
We’re are basically nothing more than an economicly, communist-ran country.
The rich/special interest groups are the ones running the show. Not the average, hard working, middle-class, over-taxed Americans that keep this country running. (for now)
If i’m FOR anything, it would be stringing up Bill Clinton and George W. Bush Jr. by their balls, abolishing Nafta all together, hand this country back over to it’s REAL citizens, and then tell Mexico and China to stick it where the sun don’t shine.
That’s the ONLY thing I currently stand for politically.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 6, 2009 @ 9:03pm

  46. Glad to hear that, Gonzo. The last true president we had was JFK and the powers that be had him killed. Gonzo, call Senators Lincoln and Pryor and tell them to vote against cap and trade. It passed the house and will be yet another step in the destruction of our country.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 6, 2009 @ 9:26pm

  47. I may just do that, MRPRFCT. Thanks.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 6, 2009 @ 9:40pm

  48. I hope you do. If you hate the Bushes, Clinton, and Obama check out The Obama Deception on YouTube. It’s an eye-opener.

    By MRPRFCT on Jul 6, 2009 @ 9:48pm

  49. Obama’s in a no-win situation. The previous administrations made sure of that.
In his attempt to correct, he will do nothing but over-correct.
We’ve proven that the rich will eventually take over our grand idea of capitolism with their out of control greed.
My fear is that Obama will over-correct by pushing socialism down our throats, which basically just destroys the very faberic of what our founding fathers set forth in the begining.
Sadly, another civil war of biblical perportions will be the only way out this time.
    Reality check anyone?

    By GonzoHog on Jul 6, 2009 @ 10:39pm

  50. Sorry for the political rants everyone.
I always get carried away when politics are brought up.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 6, 2009 @ 10:44pm

  51. Gonzo, Bud, have you been reading my mail? I read your mess and it sounds like me! But this is not a forum for politics. This is Hog recruiting.

If you don’t like the cost of medical care, increase the number of qualified doctors so that you begin to get some price competition. If we don’t like the way the Hogs play, go out and recruit those that will play and act the way that the coaches want them to. Let that hot rock kid from NY go to Cincinnati and mess up their APR. As soon as we get all of the Labron’s identified and into the pros, then the college game will settle down.

    By bigfoot on Jul 7, 2009 @ 12:41am

  52. RazorRandy,

I’m guessing your “meathead” comments were directed partially at me, and while I understand this blog site isn’t a forum for Political debates, it’s hardly the place for childish namecalling either.
If you have any comments at all about recruiting, i’m sure everyone here would be more than interested in hearing them.
    There’s plenty of room everyone.

    top 10% paid 71%
    Bottom 50% paid 3%

“Democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not”.-Thomas Jefferson

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of governmeA democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

  55. I think that we’ll be fine. People are starting to catch on to what Obama is doing and aren’t liking it. I bet people will change their minds about socialism and revert back to democracy.
