Trickett update

June 29, 2009 – 3:18 pm

QB Clint Trickett  and his father have completed their visit to Arkansas and are now currently at the airport.

He said the visit went very well and he plans to go home and talk it over with his mom and dad.  He said he might make a decision in the near future.

  1. Richard,
What is your assessment of Clint? Hes not rated all that high and doesnt have alot of offers but has won some camp awards. I would like to see us on some of the highly rated QB’s but sometimes its these guys that turn out good.

  2. Clint Trickett is the best QB here in the state of Florida. Before the end at the very least he will be a 4 STAR (Scout/Rivals)

  3. There is no news on Henry. Some stupid rumor about him being dismissed from the team.

  4. blake,

I’ve noticed lately that there’s been a lot more talk going around about Pelphrey still having 14 scholorship players.
One will have to go in some fashion.
I don’t have a clue what’s been going on with Jason Henry’s academic situation, (mum is the word) but it certainly would have to be better, compared to the situation he was in last season, if he wants to continue his basketball career as a Hog.
If Bordan really has cleared up his academic situation, and a PG school or Jr. college is now out of the question, then Henry would have to be the only player left still left in question.
Hopefully, that’s not the case. Maybe they’re all academically eligible, and one of the players will accept a greyshirt.
    That’s my hope anyway.

  5. If Trickett commits to Arkansas, everyone will be happy except for Mr Perfect. I have to believe that the Petrinos know more than Ricky Redneck and he’s a good QB. As for BBall, I hope that everyone makes it. Also, don’t forget that Britt has some trouble to clear up and everyone on the Hill is getting less forgiving (rightfully so!)

  6. Borden needs to hit the weights. Henry needs to keep his nose clean. I believe there are now more chances for him. In light of the scholly situation. Pelphrey said it will work it’s self out so I believe that.

  7. You’re right Ron, Borden needs to gain about 20-30#.

  8. Borden looks really skinny thats for sure. But he actually doesn’t look that much skinnier than some of the star centers Georgetown has had recently. I agree though he needs to add the weight. He is very athletic from what I have seen so that is a plus that he can get up and down the floor.

  10. Otis Kirk posted the following on The Razors Edge Blog:

Robert Thomas Texted me this morning and said he is now eligible and will report to UA for second summer semester.

Winston should be fine and I haven’t heard on Oden officially

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 30, 2009 @ 10:41am

  11. Thanks Ron I read the email. I think that everyone has it about the same except the Sporting News. I dont really see Auburn finishing ahead of us and it appears they are the only ones that do.

So Thomas is cleared and going to report. That is Huge!!

Winston and Oden need to be the next great news.

And then Crim, Leon, and Evans finishing their class work and getting on campus is the next really good news after that.

I am so excited about this coming season I cannot wait for Summer practices to get going!

  12. Robert “No Doubt” Thomas :P

  13. Anytime Blake,

We needed all Lineman to qualify. I guess Henderson, Lowery and others wont make it. That’ll hurt when Injuries pile up.
Oden needs to pull himself together as well.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 30, 2009 @ 11:03am

  14. Jason Henry will be our next bad news.

  15. Shawn,

I’ve been waiting for that ball to drop for quite some time.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 30, 2009 @ 11:18am

  16. I think within the next 2 weeks we should hear that news. All we can do is move on and hope our new guys can be just as good

    By shawn on Jun 30, 2009 @ 1:32pm

  17. Shawn,

Are you in the Ville and know something about this? Or just assuming that is where the one person is going to drop so we get down to 13?

  18. This time of year is soooooo slow. Did anyone watch Tyler Wilson in the spring game?? Im curious how good he is this year and could he come in and be a SEC threat?

    By shawn on Jul 1, 2009 @ 3:45pm

  19. It appeared Wilson was just about as good as Mallet. I have a feeling we’ll be hearing his name alot.

    By Qwerty on Jul 1, 2009 @ 6:31pm

  20. shawn,

A lot of people didn’t think Wilson was in the same league as Mallett going into the spring game. He was always putting up better numbers than Mallett, but most people seem to have felt it was because he scrimmaged against the 2nd team defense.
Mallett looked good, overall, in the spring game, but isn’t consistant with his accuracy on the short roll out dump passes, screens, or short crossing patterns.
Wilson, on the other hand, looked very good with his accuracy after a shaky first few minutes. His accuracy is outstanding, but he still needs to work at taking the ball from center a little more.
Malletts overall understanding of the offense is a little more developed than Wilson’s at this point too, but Wilson was impressive enough to Petrino for him to state that Wilson would be coming in to play the 2nd series of downs when games begin.
That could partly be because of what Wilson accomplished against the 1st team defense in the 4th qr. (14 of 16 pass completions)
If not for a perfectly thrown dropped pass by Jerius Wright, it would have been 15 of 16.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 1, 2009 @ 7:08pm

  21. Give Wilson time. If you are not used to taking the ball under center, it is a major adjustment in the timing of the handoffs, especially if your backs have explosive speed off the snap.

    By fb71 on Jul 1, 2009 @ 8:05pm

  22. No doubt, fb71.
In high school, Wilson ran a spread offense taylor made for attacking the corners.
When there was a handoff, a large portion of the time it was a delayed handoff. (Draw play)
RBs like M. Smith, D. Curtis, D. Johnson and Brandon Barnett are like you said, very quik off the ball.
The RB Wilson handed off to in high school was about 5′10″, 180, 4.6 – 40.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 1, 2009 @ 9:15pm

  23. Anyone that watched the spring game. Were you really impressed wiht Mallet. Could he be compared to a Sam Bradford, Colt Mccoy…. any of those guys?

    By shawn on Jul 2, 2009 @ 8:12am

  24. In my opinion Mallett cannot be currently compared to Bradford, McCoy, etc. But he does have a strong arm and commanding presence with the team. He will have a tendency to want to force things when protection breaks down. Overall I give him the slight edge over Wilson. But unless you are in love with potential vs. performance, you have to give Wilson a shot because I thought he was more accurate. Both need game experience before we really know what we have. I do believe that if Mallett plays his best and Wilson plays his best, Mallett has the edge…but not by much. He is a little better in the deep pass and throws a quick hard ball on shorter passes. But Wilson has better touch and probably a little more mobile.

    By Ima Hawg on Jul 2, 2009 @ 10:14am

  25. Ok, do you think Mallet will make that much difference compared to C. Dick? Caseys release was very slow and didnt have a strong arm but he was fairly accurate. Do you think we have a major upgrade at QB?

    By shawn on Jul 2, 2009 @ 10:35am

  26. I think it is a huge upgrade. It is kind of a shame to see Casey put up such great numbers his senior year. I wonder how good he could have been had he be under a coach who showed him how to be good instead of just told him he was good and special.

    By Daniel M. on Jul 2, 2009 @ 12:17pm

  27. Daniel M,
have you actually seen Mallet in person perform? I think its an upgrade but i havent seen him actually practice either. I hear alot about his accuracy but surely he has to be alot better. Im excited about Wilson too, i think next year Wilson will be very good.

    By shawn on Jul 2, 2009 @ 12:40pm

  28. Then Wilson will come in and compete for the national championship.

    By B-Dubz on Jul 2, 2009 @ 3:26pm

  29. From a source in ‘Ville, the one thing that hurts Mallett is his attitude. Seems to be an underlying feeling of he is not well liked by his fellow players, but the players love and respect the coaches so they put up with him.

    By fb71 on Jul 2, 2009 @ 3:55pm

  30. I watched all of the games on tv that he started at Michigan. I was extremely impressed. His arm, presence, and decision-making were incredible for a freshman. His mobility is very underrated. He is no dual-threat, but he always seemed to stay out of trouble and could easily get to the sideline and in the end zone if they were within 10 yards. At the same time, he never shyed away from a hit. I don’t think I saw one corner blitz against him because of his size. I thought he was much better than Mustain. By that time, Mitch had transferred and the possbility of the Lloyd Carr retirement was heavily discussed. I just had some gut feeling that Mallett would transfer here since he always wanted to be a hog. The stars aligned with the Mustain transferring so we had not established QB, Carr retiring, Rodriguez coming on board, and Petrino being a QB/ offensive genius.

The little I have seen on Wilson I like a lot. We always had a QB competition, it was just never with upper-SEC caliber talent. I think these guys will push each other very hard and make each other better. I hope nobody gets a big head or pouts from lack of playing time. They have a great chance to get to the next level under the guidance of Petrino and Co. Heck, Alex Mortenson is being contacted by NFL teams.

Correct me if I am wrong, Mallett has 3 years of eligibility and Wilson has 4 years since he redshirted.

    By Daniel M. on Jul 2, 2009 @ 4:00pm

  31. You are correct, Daniel M.
A lot of people seem to think Mallett will be gone in a couple of years, leaving early for the draft, but he still has some improvement to do before that can happen.
If it does happen though, Wilson could be in a position to have a breakout Jr. year.
That’s all conjecture at this point, but it’s interesting to discuss anyway.

    By brad on Jul 2, 2009 @ 7:03pm

  33. Both Mallet and Wilson are major upgrades from Casey Dick or anyone we have had since Stoerner. Casey will probably be the most unappreciated QB our program has ever seen and he played 4 years for us. He deserves our respect and admiration for getting the most out of his talent and never giving up. I was happy to see him have some success last year and the last victory over LSU was awesome. In a way I respect what he did much more than Matt Jones, because he really had to work for it. He’s a loyal Hog always!

    By Ima Hawg on Jul 2, 2009 @ 7:16pm

  34. Casey Dick made too many throws that made you say WTH was that. And he couldn’t throw it long. And some ridiculous intentional grounding…..as a senior! Did I miss anything else?

    By Mike on Jul 2, 2009 @ 7:37pm

  35. I don’t believe Casey ever had any real outstanding talent as a passing QB. He was talented overall, with good athletic ability and a decent arm, but he was never developed as a QB that would’ve sucseeded in Petrino’s system with only one year to learn.
He was a dual-threat QB out of high school, so with that being said, with 3 solid playing years in a dominant run-oriented scheem, (school bus driver) with some downtime due to injury inbetween, the boy simply never had a chance.
Mallett and Wilson not only possess the nessasary tools, but have the training out of high school to go along with them.
Once these two have a solid year of playing time underneath their belts, the sky’s the limit.

    By GonzoHog on Jul 2, 2009 @ 8:03pm

  36. Interesting point fb71. I had not heard about team mates not really liking Mallett.
3 things Casey Dick didn’t have. A strong arm, An OC that he could work under very long and and a chance. I am grateful for what he gave us.
I havent seen Mallett or Wilson on the field so I really cant say one way on the other who is the better QB. But, just to have that much talent and potential at the QB position is exciting. I believe that Wilson will get that much needed time under center and when he does Petrino will have a hard time keeping him off the field. Mallett has probably the strongest arm in NCAA history but if he doesnt throw a “catchable” ball it wont matter.

By Ron in Jordan on Jul 2, 2009 @ 9:33pm

  37. I still don’t get the Casey Dick bashing. Never did. All he did was the best he could. His biggest shortcoming was the inability to see the field. Something a QB must have…field vision. It remains to be seen whether Mallet or Wilson have it. Neither have started an SEC game. Mallet had unimpressive statistics at Michigan, but was playing in a run oriented offense much like Dick. There are Michigan fans I know that were not impressed with Mallet. I hope he fulfills everyone’s expectations but don’t expect too much too soon. Ole Miss is probably setting themselves up for the biggest disappointment of all. We’ve seen that movie before. Top 10???? Come on!!!

    By Ima Hawg on Jul 2, 2009 @ 9:36pm

  38. Casey Dick, the word I have is persistent. He came in with one type offense and it changed every year he was there. How on God’s green earth can a quarterback establish anything with changes of philosophy every stinking year?
He wasnt really given a chance to develop. He kept the wolves at bay so to speak. On the other hand, I guess people need a scapegoat and hey..he was the quarterback. I wish Casey Dick very much success in his life. He is one class act.

  39. Did anyone see the interview with Ridell Crim last night? I am ready for him to make it to the hill. I think he can be a big asset to the defense. I wonder if Leon will play safety or will move up.

    By shawn on Jul 3, 2009 @ 11:32am

  40. shawn,

Concerning Leon, I wouldn’t be too sure the coaches even know exactly where he’ll be playing this fall.
You have a wide array of positions a player could be used at when they’re 6′3″, 230 lbs., and run somewhere in the 4.4 – 40 range.
Since he was recruited for the defensive side of the ball, about the only thing we know for certain is that he’s capable of playing both saftey positions (FS and SS/Hybrid)and could probably play either of the OLB positions as well. Nice problem to have, wouldn’t ‘ya say?
Personally, I’d like to see our returning defensive players at the LB positions improve to the point to where Leon could just be evaluated as a FS or a SS/Hybrid. I think we’d be much better off.
