By Razorback56 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 9:21am
Any word on Anthony Leon?
By Hawgfan100 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 9:33am
Also how about the DT JUCO player? I am also interested in Leon..
By shawn on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:11am
I haven’t heard anything about Leon but I thought that I (heard) he would graduate from JC, but I know that Turell Williams is going to JC, Hughes is going JC, Lowery is going JC. Does anybody know anything about Shauntez Bruce, John Henderson, or Austin Tate?
By 1BIGhogFAN on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:17am
i heard henderson may notmake it.
i thought leon was going to be ok but who really knows.
By Razorback56 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:24am
Richard what is up with Leon?
I am so excited about him!
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:28am
Also with Oden, Winston, and Thomas is the idea that they should hear something in the next week or so from the NCAA Clearinghouse?
Powell just heard for B Ball so I was wondering if the NCAA looks at these things on some sort of schedule?
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:29am
Richard I know the story was out yesterday on Williams going to Butler. Could you give us an update on the other Razorback signees that did not make it and where they will be going.
Bruce and Lowery were both really good prospects out of Florida. I wonder where they will go?
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:32am
Austin Tate isnt on the list yet either. Isn’t he already on campus?
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:43am
I hadn’t heard one way or another on brod green either.
shouldn’t we know by now whether he is going to elig or not? maybe I missed it.
By Razorback56 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:50am
We should hopefully hear soon since they are starting to announce these things. I duno the NCAA doesn’t seem to have any type of rhyme or reason to their announcements.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:52am
Richard,
One other thing. I thought Oden had been doing really really well at Prep school. Is this just the way the NCAA deals with things with someone that was not eligible previously checking and making sure they don’t miss anything? I thought based on the stories of how he was doing at Hargrave that he was going to be good to go?
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 10:58am
I just added Austin Tate to the list of guys on campus. I also added Anthony Leon at the bottom.
I feel good about Oden making it.
By Richard Davenport on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:15am
Richard, besides Turrell Williams who for sure is not going to make it?
By MRPRFCT on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:18am
OH THANK GOODNESS!! Leon is just finishing up classes and then will report.
WHEW!
You had me scared there.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:23am
Bruce, Lowery, Hughey will go juco.
Not hearing good things on Henderson.
By Richard Davenport on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:25am
Sorry bout that Blake.
Oversight on my part.
By Richard Davenport on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:26am
Whew. I am just glad he is on the list now and is just finishing up some classes.
Richard could you explain to me why some players go Juco and some go Prep?
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:28am
Thanks.
By MRPRFCT on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:31am
As far as the NCAA Eligibility Center, each case is different and it takes more time on some than others. Plus I’m sure there’s sizable case load too.
By Richard Davenport on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:31am
does anybody have a certified feeling one way or the other on brod green?
we’re like 6 weeks from practice and we still don’t know.
By Razorback56 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:49am
I had heard that Coly Berna will be “gray- shirted”. Any word on this??
By Baffled in AR on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:20pm
Thanks much, Richard.
By hawgfan100 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:20pm
Help me on this …what does a gray shirt mean?
By Razorback Roger in Florida on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:33pm
it means they enroll in the fall and pay their own way for a semester and go on scholarship in the spring.
By MRPRFCT on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:36pm
I was under the impression that Winston had already been cleared for Hog ball…I thought his grades were more that acceptable. and Thanks MRPRFCT for the info
By Razorback Roger in Florida on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:42pm
focus guys.
brod green.
what’s gonna happen?
By Razorback56 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:47pm
You know the ncaa…flip a coin. I’d love to have him for this season but I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest should they turn him down.
By hawgfan100 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:50pm
There is no telling. Usually like in the case of Mallett you should always assume they are going to have to sit out a year. Now I know Broderick coming back was family related but we will have to see if the NCAA agrees and follows that guideline like they have in the past with recruits. I hope he is given the green light of course, but to be honest I think.
Oden, Leon, Winston, Crim, and Thomas getting cleared are much bigger issues. We really need the help on the defensive side of the ball. And Oden really could help on the OL.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:51pm
**I think the below recruits are more of the focus right now.
Sorry that didnt post for some reason.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:52pm
Colton Nash at that height, speed, and weight could be a monster DE. I hope he has been working hard and comes ready to go all out. I can remember the image on the sites when he committed showing his wing span. HUGE!
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 12:53pm
I agree with you Blake. I think that Colton Nash is the sleeper of the class, and will be a major contributor! That guy is already big enough to play as a true freshman. I really hope we get Winston,Crim, and Leon eligible, because they are so important.
By Searcy hog on Jun 26, 2009 @ 1:19pm
In my mind Winston Crim and Leon are our secondary so they better get eligible. I was leaning towards believe each of these three would crack the starting lineup before summer practice was over.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 1:21pm
I’m almost certain that Winston and Crim will be starters. I think that Leon will rotate in & out and after about 4 games will be starting based on performance.
By Searcy hog on Jun 26, 2009 @ 1:33pm
If elton ford comes back healthy I would say he needs to get the first looks for starting FS hands down, and let crim paly corner.
however, i don’t know if that will really happen.
I actually think a liability from last year (our secondary) has a chane to be one of the deepest positions on our team.
crim
leon
winston
norton
broadway
elton ford
there are others i am not naming as well
By Razorback56 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 1:38pm
HAS ANYONE HEARD ANY UPDATES ON ELTON FORD? IT ALMOST SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE TO HURT YOUR NECK THAT BAD AND RETURN HEALTHY AND BE AGRESSIVE. I REALLY THOUGHT HE DID A GREAT JOB BACK THERE.
By shawn on Jun 26, 2009 @ 1:45pm
All I have seen are the updates that BP put out there on Ford. He was working out well and rehabbing well and looked really good. Amazing recovery from all reports I heard, but he had not been cleared for contact yet. I don’t know what tests they need to do to determine when he will be ready for contact. I definitely wouldn’t want them to rush him back and BP sounds like he feels Ford is in great shape and working out hard but that the DRs will have the say in when he is ready to come back.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:41pm
Anthony Oden told one of my friends on facebook that he’d be here and that he’s fine. Winston’s uncle, Buck Willie, said a while ago that’d he be okay.
By MooMoo on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:46pm
I hope that is true. When dealing with the NCAA you just have to wait and see if everything gets cleared. A lot of times it can be the matter of one class and they will require them to enroll in it and take it their first semester on campus or to do summer school and satisfy it before they report to campus and enroll.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:48pm
I think everyone can settle a little bit on Crim and Leon. Seems to me if you’re simply needing to get through a class (assuming you pass) and then you’re set to enroll, then doesn’t seem like a lot to worry about. The one I’m more concerned about is Winston.
By Jay on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:49pm
What is the status of Henderson?
By Mike on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:51pm
I agree Jay. I just really hope that all these guys get through and make it to campus.
Thomas could be a great benefit for depth on the interior D line. Winston, Crim, and Leon we all already know what they will mean to our secondary. And Oden is a monster Olineman and really is needed. Between Oden, Bailey, the other Thomas already on campus, and Berna (not sure how he is recovering from his injury) we have some good young added depth to this Oline that should really be able to help push the competition and improvement by having better competition.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:51pm
I’d also be concerned about Robert Thomas. We need the depth on the DL.
And, what about D.D. Jones???!!
By Jay on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:52pm
Richard said reports on Henderson don’t sound good. He must be behind in a few classes or something. I was hoping he would make it. If he doesn’t in my mind that makes Thomas being cleared that much more important.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:53pm
DD Jones is on the list above as already on campus.
I agree like I said in the previous post. If Henderson does not make it then we really need Thomas to otherwise DD will be the only addition to the interior line.
Now Calender and Nash are coming in and I believe at Nash’s size he could help on the end right away. We will just have to wait and see.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:55pm
You never know Nash at that size with those big of arms may could help a bit on the inside. He could put those hands up and bat down balls. And he could reach side to side in the lanes and bring down runners. He projects as an end though but you never know. Desperate times could call for desperate measures.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 2:56pm
i personally believe nash needs a year in the weight room.
with lavunce askew getting in trouble the weight is even great now on thomas/dd jones i’d think.
but i’d say both have the talent to pass him on the depth chart by the end of the year.
hope askew gets his act together and plays up to the four star putenshul
By Razorback56 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:10pm
I really hope the young guys on campus and the ones reporting in the coming weeks really come in confident working hard and push the players on campus back as hard as the current players push them. Obviously being on campus longer gives you certain advantages and knowledge but when it comes to strength and talent and competitiveness I think the young players can really push and help make this team much improved.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:10pm
BP bragged on Tramain Thomas at safety also, maybe he will turn out good. I would like to see Crim take over a corner spot and Leon take a safety position.
By shawn on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:17pm
Many people think Leon would be used as the Safety/LB Hybrid or a LB. I dont know. I think he would be a Taylor Mays type safety at that size.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:23pm
Shawn I agree though all reports on a lot of our returning secondary is that they made a lot of very good improvement over the winter and in the Spring. So players like Tramain Thomas may be able to compete hard and keep their jobs. You never know. Either way the increase in depth and competition is a beautiful thing!
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:24pm
Now after this is settled in the next week or two hopefully and all these guys are on campus. BP and Co. landing Bennett and some of those other top DBs from the 2010 class is going to make sure that our secondary is not a weakness ever again. After the 2010 class depth will be what I consider a lack of a better word when describing our secondary.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:31pm
one of the things that always concerns me is the depth at defensive end and defensive tackle…if we are three deep in those positions..and if we face a ball control offense that is any good, those defensive guys get worn down as the game goes on…thus we need depth. Our linebackers corps are gaining depth…we need a few more D D Jones caliber players…height and speed on the D L.
By hog fan in florida on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:33pm
I feel descent about our secondary. Madison last year was a problem but i see better things in the future. I do think Leon will be moved up as linebacker or Hybrid instead of a true strong safety. My other concern is how fast can these JC guys such as Crim and Leon learn our defense, freshmen also!
By shawn on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:35pm
I think since the day the signed their LOI they have been getting coaches up with tapes and playbooks and info.
Leon has experience from his short time at Florida State and he and Crim both have experience from their time in Juco. The coaches have said these two will fit in just perfectly so I dont think that will be a problem.
As for Winston I think he will be put on an Island against the best WR on the opposing team and told do what you do brother. Not much to coach there except watch the best be the best.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:46pm
how do you feel about our running backs. I sometimes worry about M. Smith not being the same as last year due to his injury. That leaves D.Johnson who didnt have a good spring and Curtis who fumbles. Im not including the freshmen or Green. Trey B likes Knile Davis as much as Wingo. I see Knile as redshirting to let the ankle fully heal and be ready for 2010
By shawn on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:52pm
Just because the Clearing House hasn’t qualified players yet doesn’t mean they won’t.
As for Green, he was really late in turning in the paperwork to the NCAA so I expect a late decision.
Calender needs to add weight to be effective in the SEC.
I hope the players who do not qualify come back to us from JUCO !
By Ron in Jordan on Jun 26, 2009 @ 3:53pm
I agree but when you are talking about the names that we are waiting on there you get a little nervous. Those are big pieces of the puzzle in my mind on the defensive side of the ball and on the OL in Oden.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 4:09pm
Richard Listed 27 players. There are 5 more who are not on this list. Of the 27 I wonder how we will keep them on the hill. Someone mentioned Colby being a greyshirt. Does anyone know anything about the others ?
By Ron in Jordan on Jun 26, 2009 @ 4:16pm
We have two we were able to count towards the previous year and Green is the only one on the list not using one of those. So One of these guys and I thought it was Andu Stewart is counting towards last year.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 4:19pm
That takes you down to 26 and then if Berna greyshirted WA LA …. 25!
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 4:19pm
any comments on the RB positions?
By shawn on Jun 26, 2009 @ 4:38pm
I think we are sitting pretty at the RB position. Smith is better than last year if I had to guess. He wanted to come back for Spring but the coaches held him out to be safe. Davis should be ok and yeah he may redshirt but if he doesn’t he should be ready to go. Wingo will be ready to go. And Johnson and Curtis are ready to go. If Green gets cleared that just means we can RS one of the freshman and save them a year. I think we are deep. Fast. And both big and small so we have a back for every possession and can change pace really well and keep Smith healthy. He should be the primary back still but mixing in these other backs so he stays healthy and doesn’t wear out or get injured like last year carrying to much of the load.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 4:56pm
If Berna greyshirts can he still play this fall?
By Ron in Jordan on Jun 26, 2009 @ 5:03pm
Shawn, I think Michael Smith will be our starting RB. But he probably will only get 15 to 17 carries per game. I’m not sure that Green will be as effective as everyone hopes. Davis might have to redshirt though some have said he will be healed in time for the fall. I don’t think CBP will let him play early. Curtis is a fumble waiting to happen. Johnson will get some carries. Wingo is the X factor. I believe he will play alot as a freshman. Stuman looks good st FB. So does Bailey.
By Ron in Jordan on Jun 26, 2009 @ 5:09pm
Richard, Could you list all the walk-ons that are on campus?
By fb71 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 5:15pm
I really don’t think so, Ron. Even if he didn’t grayshirt I doubt he’d see any playing time this year anyway.
By MRPRFCT on Jun 26, 2009 @ 5:38pm
I agree with Oden and Thomas coming in. They are both older and bigger one coming from Prep and one from Juco.
Give Berna a year to work with the guys and get bigger and adjusted to the scheme and also 100% healed from his injury.
But to be technical he would be paying his own tuition and I think technically he could play as a “greyshirt”. But I agree he should RS.
By blake on Jun 26, 2009 @ 5:46pm
I didn’t think he could. I have always believed that the only difference between a Red and a Grey shirt is which class the scholl is charged to. And either way the player had to wait a year to play.
By Ron in Jordan on Jun 26, 2009 @ 5:50pm
I think that’s the case, Ron.
By MRPRFCT on Jun 26, 2009 @ 6:17pm
Thanks Guys !
By Ron in Jordan on Jun 26, 2009 @ 6:30pm
My understanding is that a grey shirt enrolls in the Spring semester after a post graduate fall semester at a place like Hargrave and then has 5 years to play 4. This is for academic purposes mostly. He may also greyshirt in Juco, play 1 year, transfer and have 4 years to play 3. This would not apply to Berna. He could redshirt on scholarship or he could walk-on for one year with 4 years on scholarship and 4 years eligibility remaining. Unfortunately, I think it is a lot more likely that one of the guys on the list will not qualify.
By Ima Hawg on Jun 26, 2009 @ 7:07pm
you’re wrong. Zac Clark greyshirted when he first came to Arkansas.
By MRPRFCT on Jun 26, 2009 @ 7:37pm
I’m mistaken also. A grayshirt waits a semester to enroll.
By MRPRFCT on Jun 26, 2009 @ 8:22pm
While I’m happy for all the players that will make it, the area of concern for me is defensive tackle.Kevin Lowery is not going to make it. It appears Henderson will not either. I am really hoping that Thomas will make it. For one thing, he has amazing physical strength (515 lb bench press last I checked). Also, if he does not make it, that will leave DD Jones as the only interior defensive lineman that will be coming this year, and while he seems to be very talented, one incoming DT is not what the doctor ordered! While Sheppard and Stadther are both solid players, the depth behing them is thin, especially with Askew’s legal troubles leaving his future in question. Perhaps one of the incoming o-linemen may be shifted over to defense.
By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jun 26, 2009 @ 8:43pm
My biggest concern right now would have to be Darius Winston.
I normally don’t try and put too much emphasis on a True Freshman, but Winston has the talent to work himself into the rotation immediately.
He could even be starting before season’s end.
Also, I expect him to compete for PR duties on the Special Teams. Speaking of Special Teams, I think it was Trey Biddy saying yesterday that he fully expected Micheal Smith to make a strong push for the PR duties this season.
Since he won’t be relied on as much to carry the offensive load like he did last season, that could free him up to make an instant impact as our return man.
Biddy could be on to something there.
By GonzoHog on Jun 26, 2009 @ 9:11pm
Also, it’s a lot more important now that Thomas makes it to campus with Askew being indefinately off of the team.
I agree that we need more than just D.D. Jones stepping in this season. With Askew not there, and Thomas not making the grade, if 1 DT tackle goes down to injury, we’re right back to square 1 again.
By GonzoHog on Jun 26, 2009 @ 9:21pm
Gonzo,
Usually a “grayshirt” starts the first semester as as walk-on and he is promised an scholarship when one becomes available. That usually is at the beginning of the next semester or at the beginning of the next year.
As I understand it, Berna has a shoulder injury that required surgery. The nature of the injury and surgery are such that he most likely will not be rehabbed until next year.
Since he is local, he can live pretty much at home, get some scholarship help for his fees, books and tuition and make it for the semester or year without incurring real financial hardship.
By bigfoot on Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:21pm
Ronnie Wingo will be an immediate impact for the razorbacks. I agree that he will be the X factor and help out on offense and dback.
By wonderfuljw on Jun 27, 2009 @ 5:10am
Grayshirts don’t enroll in the fall because they’d lose a year of eligibilty.
By MRPRFCT on Jun 27, 2009 @ 7:29am
It’ll be interesting to see how Brandon Mitchell develops over the next couple of years.
With his size and speed, we already know what kind of athlete he is, but as far as developing into the pro-style type of QB that coach Petrino develops, I think he’s a little bit of an unknown in that area.
He’s a different kind of QB altogether with his athletic ability, compared to Ryan Mallett or Tyler Wilson, and it doesn’t look like he was recruited here as an athlete like he was at some of the other schools, so with that being said, Mitchell seems to be the biggest ? to me.
By GonzoHog on Jun 27, 2009 @ 8:03am
Also, if your going to develope into the kind of QB that Petrino desires to lead his offense, it seems to me that basketball would take away from the focus needed to accomplish that.
I know a lot of Hog fans seem to think he’s going to try and jump into both sports here at the UofA, but i’m not so sure that wouldn’t work against him.
In Petrino’s system, as much as he’d have to learn and develope to become an effective QB over the next few years, I just don’t see where basketball would fit into the picture.
By GonzoHog on Jun 27, 2009 @ 8:14am
Greyshirts enroll- that’s what makes them greyshirts. They pay their way until a schollie becomes open. They don’t lose any elegiblity because they are eligible while they are paying thier own way- they are just not on schollie. That is the usual way for greyshirts, Berna maybe different because of his injury.
By thog on Jun 27, 2009 @ 8:36am
I’m still a little fuzzy on the Greyshirt/Redshirt system.
If a recruit agrees to Greyshirt in the fall of his Freshman season, pays his own way, but doesn’t play, does that mean he still has 5 years to play 4, or does he officially have to go on record as a Redshirt at a latter date?
In other words, do walk-ons redshirt, or do you have to actually be on scholorship to recieve that status?
By GonzoHog on Jun 27, 2009 @ 9:04am
Here is an explanation of greyshirt vs redshirt from WikiAnsweres…they didn’t give references so I would be hesitant to quote it as gospel but it does make sense.

why would you gray shirt a 4 star player? seems silly…but then I played college football back in the sixites…
By hog fan in florida on Jun 28, 2009 @ 10:31am
are there any walk on that have been working out this summer with the team that may a chance to play this fall.
By duck hog on Jun 28, 2009 @ 12:16pm
It probably has something to do with rehabilitating his injury back to 100%, while being able to afford the cost, and not having to be away from home. Also, The O-line isn’t super-deep, but their not exactly thin either.
I’m just guessing, but Berna seems to have a few advantages our other recruits don’t have.
By GonzoHog on Jun 28, 2009 @ 12:26pm
My thought is that by grayshirting Berna, they will use his schollie for another kid this semester. Then when he is ready to play, they will give him the next open scholarship or one from the next inbound class. BP and most other coaches have done this in order to bring in the maximum bumber of players.
By bigfoot on Jun 28, 2009 @ 2:06pm
My concern is kepting MLB Davis on the field. Franklin on the outside, where I think he much better.
By jacflash on Jul 4, 2009 @ 5:54pm
jacflash,
Keeping Davis on the field is a valid concern.
Franklin does excell more on the outside, possibly because of his experience at SS and his ability to make the open field tackle.
Developing our young LBs is a major deal right now for depth.
Tenerius Wright was moved to DE in the spring, making me wonder now, since the Evans kid (Juco transfer) arrived, if Petrino and co. will consider moving him back to MLB. Isn’t he about 240 lbs. now?
Davis, on the other hand, was listed at 224 lbs. last season. He was the only current LB listed that wasn’t talked about by name that made solid improvements with their size and strength in the weight room.
If I remember correctly, there was an article a few months back that stated “all” the D-linemen and LBs, on average, had made very good gains in the weight room, which makes me wonder just how much bigger Davis is now, if any.
By GonzoHog on Jul 5, 2009 @ 11:18am
i read that the d line gained an average of 15 pounds. but that was a long time ago, so they have probably gained even more
By Qwerty on Jul 5, 2009 @ 11:54am
Richard Did Wingo,Nash,Hamilton, & Moss make it to school? Any more word on Winston, Thomas, & Oden being cleared by the ncaa? Internet talk has Thomas being cleared. Can you verify this?
Thanks
