Braylon Mitchell update

June 24, 2009 – 7:46 pm

Braylon visited Arkansas State today and came away very impressed.  He plans to visit Arkansas on Tuesday and might make a decision later that day.

  1. This kid is a stud – hope he decides on the Hogs.

  2. Would be a shame to lose a recruit to ASU.

  3. are we seriously competing w/ ark state or is this more of him just being a nice fella?

    I’m gonna believe the latter

    By Razorback56 on Jun 24, 2009 @ 7:57pm

  4. no offense to A state of course

    By Razorback56 on Jun 24, 2009 @ 7:57pm

  5. I believe I read a few weeks back they were the first to offer him as well as ties to the school.

    By Northern Hog on Jun 24, 2009 @ 8:00pm

  6. He’s committed to Arkansas State

  7. Thanks

  8. Not for long.

  9. He should be a hog! The only way I can see him becoming a Redwolf is if they offer him as a RB.

    By Big Boi on Jun 24, 2009 @ 9:18pm

  10. he has been committed to them? or just did?

    By blake on Jun 24, 2009 @ 10:01pm

  11. Braylon committed to ASU before his Ark offer.

His performance at the Ark camp was enough for Coach Petrino to offer him.

    By Richard Davenport on Jun 24, 2009 @ 10:35pm

  12. He committed to ASU early. Arkansas came in with his dream offer. Out of respect he wanted to talk to the coaches at ASU before going public. It sounds to me we will be getting a high character young man. We are very lucky to land such a good player on the field and above the shoulder pads.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 24, 2009 @ 10:53pm

  13. It does seem like Braylon has good character and I respect this process. However, I do believe there are better outside linebacker/rover prospects in the state. I’ve heard that Thamail Morgan was wearing Braylon Mitchell out on their 7 on 7 game, which included Heber Springs vs. Cave City. I know he has had some kind of issues, but I believe he is so talented & his performance at the seniors camp could earn him a scholarship offer. Also, I think that Antonio Harding from Warren is a very good prospect that could get a U of A offer.

    By Searcy hog on Jun 24, 2009 @ 11:45pm

  14. that is excellent character from a young man at this age and with the the magnitude of this offer being his dream offer

    By blake on Jun 25, 2009 @ 12:04am

  15. He’ll be coming our way guys.

    By Northern Hog on Jun 25, 2009 @ 12:20am

  16. Maybe I’m missing something, but where is the excellent character? He committed to a team and now he may possibly decommit from them and commit to our team? Have you thought it was excellent character when we’ve had athletes give us their word only for them to decommit and commit elsewhere? Excellent character is committing and staying committed. That’s like getting married and then Monica Bellucci shows up and you leave your wife for her. You tell your wife to her face that you’re leaving her for Monica Bellucci. Wow you showed great character there! I know committing to a school isn’t as serious as getting married, but giving your word is and it’s so annoying seeing so many kids commit and then decommit from schools. It’s annoying even when my team benefits from it.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 7:12am

  17. mrperfect i can see it both ways but i seriously don’t think it’s that serious.

this kid may have had no idea he was near as talented as he turned out to be.

can’t blame him for reserving a full ride to a D1 school at all.

hindsight is 20/20 and there is way more involved than just the athletics part.

    By Razorback56 on Jun 25, 2009 @ 7:34am

  18. Just the fact that he wanted to talk to the coaches is a little character. Most kids don’t do that and the coaches read about it in the paper or hear it from someone else.

    By fb71 on Jun 25, 2009 @ 8:14am

  19. so mrperfect,
say you accept a job offer from a small company, and somehow a big corporate comes along offer you better job with much higher salaries and benefit, do you still commit to that small company or switch to bigger corporate?

    By nate on Jun 25, 2009 @ 8:22am

  20. I wonder how much character it takes to attack a teenager for a decision to improve himself. Let’s define hypocritical. Let’s define negativity.

    By teamhawg on Jun 25, 2009 @ 8:26am

  21. MrP…. I didn’t know who Monica Bellucci was… after seeing her picture, I think my wife would understand…. LOL… just kidding

By Scott of Hot Springs on Jun 25, 2009 @ 8:27am

  22. What’s real character is a kid like Chris Smith who committed to us and when he was asked what if another school comes along he said (I’m paraphrasing) “I was brought up that when you give your word you stick to it so no I won’t change my commitment”. Besides, we’re only assuming he visited A State to tell the coaches he’s switching his commitment. I haven’t read that he actually said that, yet.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 8:28am

  23. I think what we need to remember is these kids are under a ton of pressure to make a decision about their future at an early age. It is their right to look at each situation and decide what is best for them and I wish them luck, it is not an easy decision. Everyone is entitled to decide where they want to go to school or seek employment as long as they are qualified. If he decides to stay at Arkansas State, I applaud his decision. If he comes to the UofA, I will applaud that as well if that is what he deems best for his future. MRPRFCT, I agree, it would be nice to actually see if he went there to speak to the coaches about his decision. You can’t have enough quality guys on your team that you can depend upon to stay out of trouble.

    By Northern Hog on Jun 25, 2009 @ 10:03am

  24. Mr Perfect,

You are full of it as usual. At the time he thought that ASU had the best (and maybe only) offer. I don’t think changing your mind shows a lack of character. What RIJ is referring to is that his handling of the ASU coaching staff shows class and respect instead of just immediately making a public statement that he is changing his commitment. I wish him well either way. But an SEC offer is hard to pass up.

    By Ima Hawg on Jun 25, 2009 @ 10:03am

  25. We can’t all be Mr.perfects. (meh)

    By Razorback56 on Jun 25, 2009 @ 10:08am

  26. So if someone commits to us and then decommits because Florida offers them you wouldn’t be upset and say something about honoring a commitment, or keeping their word… Don’t say you wouldn’t because we’ve all done it before. The kid has nearly a year to impress colleges, he didn’t have to commit early.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 10:09am

  27. LOL you guys are awesome. You talk about me more than you do recruits. Thanks for the attention, but let’s keep the focus on the kids.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 10:12am

  28. MRPRFCT, I have just recently began commenting on items in this forum, however, I have been reading it for quite some time and you are correct: There are quite a few people who would (and have been) criticizing these kids if they choose to go elsewhere after first committing to Arkansas. That being said, you will never see that from me—Thanks.

    By Northern Hog on Jun 25, 2009 @ 10:19am

  29. I think the fact that he has not just flopped his decision to AR after being offered is very commendable. He went to visit AR State and I am sure partly to discuss with the staff there how he is feeling and how he feels he may want to switch his commitment. What you all don’t seem to understand is that first this is a verbal commitment. To me I have never felt that comfortable about them in the first place until they sign on the paper. And some of these kids families may put tremendous pressure on them if they think the offer they just received is the best they will get. There are a lot of families that cannot afford to send kids to college and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I dont know what his situation is in this particular instance but being that both schools are in state and one is in the SEC and the other a much smaller conference and he still went to visit ASU after being offered by the Hogs and has not just committed immediately says alot about him to me.

    By blake on Jun 25, 2009 @ 11:01am

  30. It says he’s still considering asu

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 11:07am

  31. Braylon go ahead and come to the Hogs!!

    We are ready for you.

    By blake on Jun 25, 2009 @ 11:45am

  32. This young man is the one who will have to live with his decision. No one on this board has the right to judge him or question his character without knowing him. Everyone has the right to change their minds. I wish him the best on his future, Hog or Redwolf.

    By Mel on Jun 25, 2009 @ 12:13pm

  33. Braylon should go where he wants to go to school. Whether he wants to be the next Governor or play in the NFL, he can achieve either by going to ASU or UA. Coach Roberts and Coach Gunn are great guys and will do right by Braylon if he sticks with his commitment.

    By MC on Jun 25, 2009 @ 12:55pm

  34. If Braylon chooses ASU he will regret that decision the rest of his life. He will think what could have been if he doesnt go to Arkansas. Make it easy for yourself and choose Arkansas its your dream school.

    By Mp9 on Jun 25, 2009 @ 1:45pm

  35. Why would he regret it? Do you think Tyrell Johnson regrets going to ASU? Governor Beebe? How about me? I could have attended either school but went to ASU. I am very happy with the decision.

I know full well that most will choose the bigger school, but that’s not for everyone. Do you think Joe Adams regrets not going to USC?

It’s not that dramatic. Heck, by February he might decide to go outside the state if the mood strikes him.

    By MC on Jun 25, 2009 @ 2:25pm

  36. MRPRFCT,

Where did you get that target that is on your backside?

    By bigfoot on Jun 25, 2009 @ 2:42pm

  37. Mr P,

The reason you get so much attention here is because nobody can the issues because your big butt is always planted in front of the TV.

I guess you have your own cheerleader now !

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 25, 2009 @ 2:54pm

  38. Bigfoot, it all started when I said HDN brought passion back to the football program after the dark ages of the Crowe/Ford years and has not stopped since. It’s ok. I’m a big boy. I don’t hold grudges and don’t mind the fellas that disagree with me.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:01pm

  39. LOL Ron, who is my cheerleader?

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:02pm

  40. In my original comment I said he wanted to talk to ASU first. I forgot to include the reason he has delayed.
He said he wanted to talk to the ASU coaches face to face. He was planning to do that this past weekend but could not make it there. So the earliest he could get there was Wednesday.
Sorry for not telling that part earlier. I just overlooked it.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:06pm

  41. So, he decided to visit asu to tell their coaches his intentions to commit to Arkansas and tells Richard he enjoyed his visit to asu? Something doesn’t add up.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:11pm

  42. Northern Hog … MRP

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:15pm

  43. Agreeing with me isn’t cheerleading, Ron.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:17pm

  44. enjoying a visit to a state and committing to u of a aren’t necessarily at odds with each other.

there is tons of contradictory stuff in recruiting articles all the time.

    By Razorback56 on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:18pm

  45. well, he’s already visited a state and he’s still committed there. There’s more to this story than just going up there to tell the a state coaches to their face that he’s attending Arkansas.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:26pm

  46. Ron,I call them like I see them. If you made a comment I agreed with, I’d mention it here as well. Agreeing or disagreeing with someone on previous comments made are the cornerstone of most of these discussions.

    By Northern Hog on Jun 25, 2009 @ 3:42pm

  47. Northern Hog, I was using your comment as an example. Sorry for offending you. :)

MRP, it wasnt that long ago you called me a cheerleader when I agreed with Gonzohog. If you cant that the heat, get out of the kitchen !

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 25, 2009 @ 4:32pm

  48. *pitching LOL

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 25, 2009 @ 4:57pm

  49. A kid has every right to change his mind. He has not signed anything yet, and if he got an offer from florida after commiting to UA I would not fault him for signing there. It is obvious that mrprfct was never offered a scholarship by more than one program. It really is a tough decision.
Bottom line is that he is not good enough to get on the field at UA, so he should consider that and I wish him the best of luck.

  50. Anybody hear Michael Jackson died ?

  56. MRP sounds as though he knows sports BUT is so negative because he failed at all things athletically. And with his mentality, based on his writing, that he is trying to make up for his failures.

    By fb71 on Jun 26, 2009 @ 7:05am

  57. LOL FYI I’m still an athlete.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 26, 2009 @ 9:32am

  58. fb71, I’m sure your comment there has earned points with my “haters”. Job well done.
