  7. I cant wait to see Wingo in a Razorback Uniform tearing it up on Saturdays.

    By blake on Jun 17, 2009 @ 10:59am

  8. As good as Wingo is, don’t forget Smith is back but won’t be carrying the load alone, Curtis is a year older and stronger, the OL will have had another year together, we now have a much more formidable threat at QB(quicker release, a legitimate deep threat, bigger, stronger and faster that Dick), and do NOT forget Broderick Green who could be another legitimate Heisman candidate at Arkansas.

2009-2010 will be a much more dangerous offensive team and 2010-2011 could be a national championship caliber squad if the defense develops to the same degree as the offense… which is likely since success on one side of the ball often breeds success on the other.

One final factor that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention is the conditioning of these kids… Coach Veltkamp and his GA’s have taken these kids to an unprecedented level of fitness and strength… and it’s gonna show with the schedule the Hogs are facing this fall.

    WPS!

PS… Any decision on Green’s petition to the NCAA regarding his eligibility for this season?

    By tahoehog on Jun 17, 2009 @ 2:43pm

  9. Tahoe I agree with you. We can’t forget Johnson either. He did run all up and down on LSU. So between Smith, Curtis, Johnson, Green (if eligable), Wingo, and Kniles Davis. I like where we are at.

There are 3 or 4 more good RB/HB on campus also that did well on the 2nd and 3rd teams during the spring. We look good and deep there. ESPN blog writer Chris Low says our WR are as deep as any in the SEC. And clearly we have some very good competition and options at QB going into the year.

I agree with you that the OL is a year into the system and improved. And the defense should improve along with the Offense. The competition and success of one unit usually does push the other unit along. Not to mention the highly touted recruits on the defensive side of the ball joining the team this year.

I cant wait until Fall. To be honest I hope summer goes by quickly because I am so ready for this season.

    By blake on Jun 17, 2009 @ 2:57pm

  10. I to have National Title Hopes for the Hogs in 2010 and on. How soon it will be that we may be a contender we will find out more when this season gets going and we see where we are at. I think our nasty may have some serious bite to it that people are not expecting.

    By blake on Jun 17, 2009 @ 2:58pm

  11. I agree for the most part except the Green being a possible Heisman candidate. I don’t think he’ll get enough touches to be a factor like that. One guy I’m interested in seeing how CBP uses him is Van Stumon. From what I understand he’ll be a FB/HB/TE.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 17, 2009 @ 3:01pm

  12. Stumon has become a great lead blocking FB from the reports I read in the Spring. He also did well in short yardage carry situations.

I agree Green could make an impact but I dont think he will get the carries to be Heisman material. I think Mallett would be our best chance their in the years to come.

    By blake on Jun 17, 2009 @ 3:04pm

  13. Richard,

Do you believe any of the current Hog recruits for 2010 will be trying to graduate early and enroll early in school?

    By blake on Jun 17, 2009 @ 3:08pm

  14. Great news to hear. This kid is big at 6ft 3in with some added muscle. His speed is as good as any, with a little practice I think he could make the biggest impact of any of the freshman in this class. He could become the thunder to Michael Smiths lightning. As for the Michael Dyer comments I think we need to sit back and wait and see how things play out. Last year at this very time these sites and articles had Darius W. going to Mich along with DD Jones. Mizzous Rivals site all but said “90% chance” Ronnie Wingo would be a Tiger. If he does decide to go to Auburn, Im sure BP will give it his all in trying to keep him with us. It almost seems sometimes some of the writers on some sites want to bait fans like us into believing and saying stupid things about a player. I just hope we get him, just imagine championships he’ll be missing if he goes elsewhere. WPS!!

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:06pm

  15. Great point, HawgwildinMI.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:11pm

  16. IMO There’s not enough talk about Dennis Johnson. Look at what he did in the LSU game.

    By Mike on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:20pm

  17. Apparently, he disappointed CBP during spring practice.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:22pm

  18. Your right Mike this is already a stallion backfeild, but if Ronnie Wingo shows up strong in his Fresh. yr than that will mean less carries for someone. Not saying it will be him at all. It does make more sense though cause we really need him to stay strong at the return game. Who would replace him there?

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:28pm

  19. Anyone read the Collegefootballnews blogger roundtable discussion part 3?

    Many positives mentioned about Arkansas.

    By Mike on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:29pm

  20. Maybe Wingo and Gordon since they’ll probably be our fastest players.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:32pm

  21. I honestly beleive we are better than most are giving us credit for. Call me homer, but I watched Ryan Mallett play alot as a freshman. We could be looking at a future #1 pick in the NFL. Thats not just a sentiment just by me, I seen it personally in the wolverine fans tears when they lost him! Good job landing this one BP!

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:37pm

  22. Wingos hightlights show that he knows how to take them back. What do you think the chances Darius W. returns punts this year?

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:39pm

  23. I’m not worried about our offense. I’m worried about the other two phases of the game. The biggest issue for Ronnie to get on the field is pass blocking. I don’t have an opinion about Winston returning punts next year. I haven’t seen him do it, but can he be any worse than who we had last year? Btw who did we have last year?

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:45pm

  25. From Brian Harbach:

Last year’s surprise team was Ole Miss, thanks in part to a transfer QB (Jevan Snead) providing the talent at a position that the Rebels had not had in years. This year’s team that is going to overachieve is Arkansas and they will follow the same formula that Ole Miss did last year. A transfer QB, Ryan Mallett, is going to provide the athleticism and stability that the Razorbacks have been lacking for years. The Hogs return nearly their entire defense, their top running back and they have the SEC’s second most innovative offensive mind as their head coach. If it wasn’t for their schedule they would be a dark horse team for the SEC West, but they will win 8 or 9 games this season and get back to a good bowl game.

    By Mike on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:46pm

  26. Thanks Mike ! :)

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:49pm

  27. Great article thanks for the lookout Mike.

  28. Jevan Snead > Ryan Mallett

  29. http://cfn.scout.com/2/867145.html

Another part of that series of articles discussing whether or not Ole Miss will live up to the preseason hype:

I say this so that the esteemed readers of this roundtable will realize that I do not give the following opinion lightly: the 2009 Ole Miss Rebels will probably fall short of fan expectations just as most Houston Nutt teams have done. In 10 years at Arkansas, Houston Nutt proved himself to be a dangerous game-day coach, perfect for pulling upsets with emotional fervor and unconventional play-calling. He also proved himself incapable of leading his teams on the even keel from week to week that is necessary to maintain a top-10 type of season. Of his 10 Arkansas teams, two began the season ranked in the pre-season top 25, and both finished that season at a lower ranking while spending multiple weeks out of said rankings. Of the unranked teams that managed to climb into the top 25, only two managed to spend more than five consecutive weeks there, and all saw their ranking eventually decline.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 17, 2009 @ 9:16pm

  38. Well, on a 3-1 count Eibner swung at what would have been ball 4.

Shouldn’t he have been taking that pitch?

  39. WPS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hogs win is 13 innings 4-3

  40. Congrats. Great game.

Hopefully Ts…..kow will be ready to play Friday afternoon.

    By Mike on Jun 17, 2009 @ 11:09pm

  41. His finger will be hurting to bad to grip the bat. I’ve had that same injury and it’ll take about 2 to 3 weeks before be can grip a bat effectively.

  44. that was the greatest baseball game ive ever seen. What is going on w Dyer?I know were loaded but this kid is the best ive ever seen @the hs level.

    By JOHN SPURLOCK on Jun 18, 2009 @ 8:17am

  45. It was the most exciting game I have ever seen too ! Report says Ben Tschepikow has a broken finger.
I dont know whats going on with Dyer but it sure makes people nervous.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 18, 2009 @ 8:45am

  46. Great game last night but you know LSU is lickin their chops and looking ahead to the Horns… heck maybe they’ll forget and have to forfeit. Either way GO HOGS!

    Back to Wingo et al…

Agree with everything folks have said about the supporting cast returning. As far as Broderick Green not getting enough touches to be a Heisman candidate, you’re probably right… but I see him as a Marshall Faulk or Tiki Barber type of back who can give the defense fits up the gut or out on the flats and maybe he could generate the kind of all-purpose numbers that would get some attention.

One final thing in defense of Willy Robinson’s guys, last years offense didn’t do them many favors insofar as time of possession or key turnovers… both of those factors should improve again this year. Also the three guys transferring in from JC in Cali are big tough kids with the potential for making a sudden impact… fall ball should be interesting and like the rest of you all but September 5th cannot come soon enough!

BTW have the Hogs EVER had a tougher schedule stretch? GA, AL, Aggies, Auburn, Gators and Ole Miss? Would hate to think we end October W2-L6 but Petrino and his team have a tough row to hoe.

    WPS from the Sierras!

    By tahoehog on Jun 18, 2009 @ 9:24am

  47. Dyer says Auburn is at the top of his list:

One of the most intriguing is Michael Dyer, whom Rivals.com and Scout.com rate as one of the nation’s top five tailbacks. Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who spent 13 years as a successful high-school coach in Arkansas, has courted Dyer, an Arkansas native.

Dyer, who made an unofficial visit to campus last week, recently told AuburnSports.com that the Tigers are his top priority.

“They’ve actually been No. 1 for a while,” he said. “(Malzahn’s offense) is probably one of the best systems I could be under in college football.”

    By Mike on Jun 18, 2009 @ 10:09am

  48. Will it help him in getting drafted? I tend to think not. Pro teams just showed in this years draft that they are not entirely sold on the spread just yet. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens to the players that were drafted out of these systems. I personally think BP has a system that is more suited for pro talent. Whatever floats his boat though, he may be on the outside looking in when BP is taking this team back to the glory days of the 60’s and 70’s.

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 18, 2009 @ 10:28am

  49. I don’t think Arkansas will have to rely on any ONE player like we had to during the HDN days. I thinks thats something BP is trying to stray away from.

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 18, 2009 @ 10:32am

  50. Agreed, HawgwildinMI. I’d really love to see Dyer as a Hog, but if he doesn’t sign I won’t see it as the end of the world.

    By leftcoasthog on Jun 18, 2009 @ 2:58pm

  51. Actually Dyer may not be good enough to start for Arkansas. He’ll probably have an easier time making the lineup at Auburn. Especially with that funky pass all the time offense. The RB’s at Tulsa were very unimpressive.

    By Ima Hawg on Jun 18, 2009 @ 3:52pm

  52. Its not that he is not good enough. He is GOOD. It is Auburn right now does not have the depth we do at RB.

However.. the #1 and #2 RBs in the nation are considering Auburn so what will that do to help Dyer? He dosent need to be the next Green and sign as the 3rd or 4th best RB on a team and then transfer back. I am sure he has his reasons for having Auburn #1, but I would more so like to know his reasons for not having Arkansas his #1.

    By blake on Jun 18, 2009 @ 4:05pm

  53. Right now we can just hope that Dyer doesn’t make a quick decision to commit to Auburn. Hopefully he’ll come around and see that he should be a Hog.

    By Mike on Jun 18, 2009 @ 4:37pm

  54. After spending a season on the hill, Malzahn knows exactly what to tell a young talented RB recruit like Dyer.
We had the most talented RBs in the land in ‘06, but they could’ve been even better than what was shown with a more balanced offense.
Malzahn has never completely ran the offensive show when he had REAL talent.
I think Micheal Dyer is eager to find out.
    Thoughts anyone?

    By GonzoHog on Jun 18, 2009 @ 5:22pm

  55. Hey Gonzohog,

Dyer has a lot of people telling where to go. No, not there ! lol
I can usually be objective on almost and subject but Dyer is special. I want him to be a hog, no if’s and’s or but’s about it. I dont really know what the NFL will think but I can tell you that they say QB’s from a spread don’t have all the tools needed to be an NFL QB.
Running backs are graded differently. Some will say that if he wasn’t productive until his senior year that he doesn’t have alot of mileage. Some will say why didn’t he do something until senior year. My point is a RB has to be fast, durable, run inside with power, outside with speed. I do believe that a RB’s numbers are a little inflated from a spread. Bottom line is if a RB has the tools he gets the job. IMHO

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 18, 2009 @ 5:57pm

  56. I want Dyer to be a Hog pretty bad myself, but like some have said Ron, it’s not going to make us or break us as a team.
It would be great to land him, but with the talent Petrino has already assymbled at that position, it’s not like we’re going to be hurting.
Just think about what we’d be saying right now if we had very little talant at RB, but Dyer was still promoting Auburn as his favorite. There’s a big difference there my friend.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 18, 2009 @ 7:23pm

  57. Yes, Your right

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 18, 2009 @ 8:01pm

  58. Ima Hawg,

Gus runs a balanced offense. Like him or hate him that is a fact. The pass all the time was BS from huggers like yourself who said us real hog fans aka anti-dork fans wanted to pass 50 times a game. It was BS. Just like Gus we wanted balance. With that said, i hope he does well as long as it doesn’t come at the Hog’s expense. This includes recruits and games. As for the Dork, I hope he goes 0-12. He actually ran more then passed last season. You think you huggers could one day get your fact straight, but like your hero your ignorant of the truth. I want Dyer to be a Hog, but I do wonder if his height could affect him? Apparently we got to many RB’s for him. Auburn has just as many. RB is one position we will be ok at with or without him. Bryan Jones would be a bigger lost.

    By hog_fan on Jun 18, 2009 @ 11:07pm

  59. Did Barry Sanders height affect him?

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 8:53am

  60. “huggers” and “haters” are all Razorback fans. I personally hopes malzahn fails miserably. He’s actively recruiting our kids. He’s recruiting them harder than any other coach in the country. More than TT did when he was at ole miss and aubarn and more than HDN does at ole miss. He wants to take Arkansas athletes and beat Arkansas with them and that’s pure evil.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 8:57am

  61. Wingo has all the measurables. But has anyone realy been impressed with his video? I’ve seen guys like him before look like tarzan play like jane. IMO DJ & MS are the only two real backs we have and I wasn’t sold on DJ until he took it to LSU. Dyer is not a must right now but that might all change by October i hope its not to late by then!

    By Big Boi on Jun 19, 2009 @ 10:14am

  62. I’d be suprised if Dyer commits anywhere before October… He’ll be checking out how both the Hogs and Auburns offenses look before he does anything. That’s what i would do if it were me.

    By Piglett on Jun 19, 2009 @ 10:46am

  63. Hey MRPRFCT

Don’t we want to take Alabama athletes and beat Alabama/Auburn with them?

    You know, just sayin’.

    By Ron Mexico on Jun 19, 2009 @ 11:29am

  64. We don’t have an Alabama native recruiting Alabama for us.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 11:42am

  65. I believe Dyer is familiar with both offenses already. I’m sure each coaching staff has shown him film and told him how they planned to use him.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 11:44am

  66. Maybe not now, but how about Tracey Rocker when he was here?

    By Ron Mexico on Jun 19, 2009 @ 12:12pm

  67. I seen the video on Wingo and was impressed with his size and speed. There was a reason he was a top 100 player, besides that its his potential that makes me the happiest to see him out there. WPS!

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 19, 2009 @ 12:25pm

  68. How many players did Tracy Rocker pull from alabama? Were we able to establish a pipeline? No. It’s clear that’s what Malzahn is doing. He’s offering our juniors before we do. If he’s successful, we won’t be.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 1:12pm

  69. I love Wingo’s size and speed, but his tape lacked a lot to be desired. The best highlight tape I’ve seen is Dyer’s. His blend of size, speed, strength, quickness, and vision is unmatched. Be a Hog Dyer! Be a hero to your state!

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 1:14pm

  70. I’d say that Gus has far from established a pipeline yet.

Saying what he is doing is pure evil is one of the silliest things I have ever read.

    By Ron Mexico on Jun 19, 2009 @ 1:27pm

  71. All this and a Georgia Tech fan to boot !

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 19, 2009 @ 1:37pm

  72. Guys, do you think it is right to be saying negative things about new recruits….. expecially Wingo on this thread?

    By Mike on Jun 19, 2009 @ 1:43pm

  73. 2 questions
    1. Who is making negative comments about recruits, particularly Ronnie Wingo?
    2. Why are you trying to censor speech? Which is what you’re attempting to do by posing that question

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:06pm

  74. I’d say malzahn is trying to form a pipeline. Trying to destroy the Arkansas Razorbacks is evil and taking (attempting to) players from Arkansas is doing just that.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:09pm

  75. Hey guys lets not get to worked up about Gus. Were not even sure he will be able to have as good as an offense everyone else thinks. We also dont know how patient Auburn will be or if he can even get the right players for what he plans to do. He can get the best RB’s in the country, if he dont commit himself to the off. and def. line they will not run very far at all.

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:13pm

  76. Touche’ there Mike.

There are a lot of negative comments here about some recruits. Especially about Dyer !
We dont need it. Dyer dont need it. And the U of A dont need it !

MRP, Mike didnt attack anyones free speech. He asked a question. You my friend attacked him for his question. So just breathe :)

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:14pm

  77. I agree it does look as if he is trying to stick it to Arkansas, somewhere he couldnt take the heat once upon a time.

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:16pm

  78. Dyer has publicly stated: His Recruiting at Arkansas is going Great ! Except for some of the things I read about me on the different Blogs.
I believe if we dont tone it down then we only have ourselves to blame.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:22pm

  79. No I didn’t. And I don’t believe anyone made a negative comment about Wingo. Ron, have you read a negative comment about Wingo lately?

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:22pm

  80. I read in an interview that Dyer particularly loved Ron in Jordan’s comments. That made me really jealous.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:27pm

  81. MR P
This could be considered a negative comment by some and it was posted by you

“I love Wingo’s size and speed, but his tape lacked a lot to be desired.”

Maybe you dont see that you attacked Mikes question but I’m sure everyone else here could see it differently.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:34pm

  82. I doubt very seriously that Dyer made any comments about me and my comments. That, I’d like to see.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:36pm

  83. I havent seen anything today thats to offensive. If people are getting upset at what is being said today, I say your just a little too touchy today.

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:37pm

  84. Where is this supposed interveiw posted?LOL!

    By HawgwildinMI on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:39pm

  85. If that’s considered negative….WOW

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:41pm

  89. We are having a rain delay of almost 2 hours now.
Cox may pitch too if needed.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:55pm

  90. Good gosh…a pipeline to Auburn? Tale of the Tape?? Negative blogging??? You guys think WAY too much of yourself if you think you have ANY influence over recruiting!!!

    By Ima Hawg on Jun 19, 2009 @ 3:02pm

  91. Logically, it can be deduced that you’re saying two things.

    1. Wingo is lacking
    2. Dyer is better than Wingo.

Regarding free speech….”I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”

  92. I believe that Dyer is better than Wingo and so do most recruiting analyst when looking at the top 100 list from last year and this year. I said his highlight tape was lacking. That’s not a knock on Wingo.

At first she wasn’t happy that I worked our vacation in September around the Georgia game. She wanted to come home on Saturday the 19th. Of course I can’t do that because the game is on the 19th so I told her we had to leave on the 18th. She finally came around with a little negotiating.

    Game’s on.

    ***************

As far as Malzahn’s attempt to develope a recruiting pipeline in Arkansas goes, he’d be a fool not too.
This might be a premature statment at the momment, but lets look ahead another 4 or 5 years. If Petrino has taken us to the level of play we all expect him to, another bigtime program could come calling on Petrino. (Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame, etc…)
If someone else just happens to be lucrative enough for Petrino to leave, who’s to say Gus Malzahn won’t be the next HC of interest for the UofA?
Petrino is currently trying to develope a pipeline in the state of Florida. If he becomes more and more sucsessful at doing just that each year, while building the UofA’s football program to the elite level we all hope he does, then he becomes a very attractive HC of interest to those programs looking for a new HC.
Personally, if I were Gus Malzahn, I’d have 2 things motivating me to make a push for the Arkansas kids:
    (1) To show everyone, not to mention 1 SEC HC inparticular, that i’m not that “HS coach” you kept saying I was.
(2)Go back to the UofA as the HC someday (in my home state) and accomplish there what “that other SEC HC” could not.

By the way, Ole Miss just happened to be recruiting Dyer as well, but it seems he isn’t too interested in attending that school, which just happens to be closer than Auburn.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 19, 2009 @ 9:38pm

  108. Isn’t Ole Miss’s HC from Little Rock?

    By GonzoHog on Jun 19, 2009 @ 9:48pm

  109. malzahn as our head coach? What a nightmare that’d be. I can see it now. QBs that can’t make it in the pros because they’d never taken a snap from center or read a defense their entire college career. We’d be a “system” team just like texass tech is. No thanks.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 20, 2009 @ 5:27am

  110. MRPRFCT,

I’m going to have to agree with you on this one. We went 10 years without a QB being able to read a defense because we were a “system” team.
Your right, it was a nightmare.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 20, 2009 @ 8:20am

  111. Let me right this down. Gonzohog believes having malzahn as HC is a nightmare of an idea.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 20, 2009 @ 8:56am

  112. MRP..You can’t read. Gonzohog didn’t say Malzahn as HC was a nightmare. He said “system” team, which a lot of coaches around the country do/use. Wake up or have more coffee to use your brain.

    By fb71 on Jun 20, 2009 @ 9:40am

  113. I can’t read? Interesting. I don’t drink coffee. It’s bad for the body. malzahn runs a spread system. A system is bad. malzahn is bad for the UA.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 20, 2009 @ 9:53am

  114. Let me write this down. MRPRFCT believes having Nutt as a HC was a nightmare of an idea.
Nutt runs a “run right, run left, run up the stinking middle, punt” system. Systems are bad.
Nutt was bad for the UofA.

  115. It’s gonna be a long summer :(

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 20, 2009 @ 11:06am

  116. Ron,

Back to the discussion on Ronnie Wingo, whats your take on the different mutiple ways Petrino could use him in his offense?
I haven’t watched that much video on Wingo, but if he has the hands to catch the ball out of the backfield consistantly, that could go a long ways towards knowing just how efficient Wingo will be in his downfield running.
I don’t believe he’ll have the kind of explosion out of the backfield on a handoff like a Micheal Dyer would have, but if he were already running and had the opportunity to catch a well placed pass, he would then be able to use that great size and speed on either the outside corner or just past the line of scrimmage.
He’s just as big, but faster than most OLBs, so that might turn out to be a good thing, even in the SEC.
Isolating Wingo on only 1 defensive player at a time would surely have to work in our favor.
I noticed in his HS stats that he was averaging nearly 20 yards per catch, with a lot of those passes coming on short passing routes.
His yards after the catch are probably the most impressive thing about his stats. Thoughts?

    By GonzoHog on Jun 20, 2009 @ 12:26pm

  117. Hi Gonzohog,

First of all I believe Wingo is a huge back with great speed and soft hands.
    1. I would use him as 3rd down back to carry the ball.
    1. I would put him in the slot reciever position.
    1. I would use him as a WR in the 5 wide set.
    1. I would use him on any down to rush up the middle and he has the speed to turn the corner.
    1. Teach him to be a good pass blocker as well.

I used all 1’s because I think they are all equally effective ways to get him the ball and create Big plays.

Here is the thing about a defense. The further away from the line of scrimmage you get the smaller and faster the defenders become. Any time you can get a bigger and faster player on a smaller defender you create a mismatch. I dont believe their are many DB’s even in the SEC who can totally cover Wingo.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 20, 2009 @ 11:23pm

  118. I couldn’t agree more, Ron.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 20, 2009 @ 11:33pm

  119. We had a guy on here the other day, Anonymous. He appeared from his comments to be a coach. This would be a good place to have him comment.

BP must have a plan. Suppose that you get Davis, Green, and Wingo in the old T formation set as a going in offense. Power Sweep Right or Left. Maybe some variation of this for third and short.

I bet Wingo would be handful on the Tunnel Screen. Can he throw the ball from a tailback pass play?

    By bigfoot on Jun 21, 2009 @ 12:39am

  120. Here is some interesting things about the spread offense in an article by Jeremy Crabtree, Rivals.com

Barry Every said there is one big reason why quarterbacks might be struggling to develop in the high school ranks.
“The spread offense is killing quarterbacks’ ability to take snaps under center,” Every said. “At every camp I have been to, quarterbacks are being asked to do three-, five- and seven-step drops. Those are things they’re not used to because of the spread offense because they’re in the shotgun on every play.”

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/recruiting/football/2009-05-06-rivals-qbs_N.htm

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 21, 2009 @ 1:21am

  121. Good research, Ron.
It does seem that the spread offense (even as popular as it’s become) has a bit of a quirk to it when it comes to the complete developement of our young QBs.
We all know first hand how that very important skipped ingredient affected Tyler Wilson this past year.
This is not a good trend for college coaches tying to develope QBs into professional athletes, but at the same time, I don’t see that trend stopping.
Winning is still the name of the game, even on the HS level, and for a lot of the schools that aren’t loaded with tons of elite talent, this is the only way to level the playing field.
Look what it’s done for Greenwood HS. There’s not very many div. 1 athletes at all coming out on a regular basis, but the multiple championships are still there.
Just out of curiosity, I wonder what kind of offense is ran at the school Kiel Frazier comes from. I can’t remember his school, but I do know that Gus Malzahn recently offered him a scholorship to come play at Auburn.
I don’t remember any other big programs offering him.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 21, 2009 @ 7:47am

  122. bigfoot,

I’ve never seen Wingo catch a pass, except on film, but what worries me more than anything right now is Mallett’s inconsistancy at throwing the ball to the RB coming out of the backfield on screens and “swinging gate” type RB pass plays.
In the spring game, I can’t recall know many times I seen him throw the ball at the RBs knees or just flat out behind him, making the RB adjust to the ball, messing up the entire timing of the play, not to even mention the fact that he simply just throws the ball with way too much zip for those kinds of plays.
Eventually, this may take away a possible big play that Wingo would have normally pulled off.
If you look at OU’s offense, Bradford was always right on target on those type of plays.
The timing and accuracy of the QB will mean everything.
I hate it when I get these bad gut feelings about something.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 21, 2009 @ 8:18am

  123. That’s why urban meyer is getting tebow more snaps from center this year because he knows the spread doesn’t develop QBs. If I were a coach I’d use that when recruiting QBs against aubarn and florida.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 21, 2009 @ 8:39am

  124. Thanks, Kiel Frazier is from Shiloh Christian.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 21, 2009 @ 8:46am

  125. The spread offense is popular for 4 reasons I believe.

    1. It’s easier for the QB to worry about only what he has to do. Not worry about reading a defense.
    2. Defenses have a hard time stopping it at the H.S. level.
    3. It’s exciting to watch and puts a lot of points on the board.
    4. Points usually equal winning and winning is job security.

Hey bigfoot, just breathe my friend :P

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 21, 2009 @ 8:54am

  126. Sorry Gonzo, Kiel Frazier is also in a spread offense.

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 21, 2009 @ 8:56am

  127. Yes Mallett needs to learn a little thing called putting a little air under the ball. Or touch as many call it.
If he can learn this we will be hard to beat. By anybody !

Sorry about the bigfoot comment. I was thinking for a second that Bigfoot wrote it ;)

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 21, 2009 @ 9:02am

  128. That may very well work against Auburn and their coaching staff, but with Urban Meyer’s resume and a chance to play for a NC almost every single year at Florida, I highly doubt it would really make that much of a difference in the long run.
Florida doesn’t always nessesarily have the best coaches. They just always seem to have the very best athletes.
Florida’s population is currently in the vacinity of 18 million people. For the size of that state, no one else can match it.
In the article Ron posted above earlier, Florida still has more of the top athletes coming out of HS on a yearly basis than Texas or California.
I believe Florida had 44, Texas had 35, and Cal. had 30 of the nations top ranked players.
In other words, schools like Florida, Texas and USC will always have talent that competes for NCs. That will always be the #1 sales pitch to any recruit, regardless of his position.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 21, 2009 @ 9:15am

  129. Ron,

I had forgotten about Frazier playing for Shiloh Christian. It makes sense though with Malzahn having Springdale connections.
I’m not real sure just how sucsessful Aurburn can be in the SEC with Malzahn leading their offense, but they could be a handful for some of the league’s teams still trying to shore up their defenses.
Arkansas would qualify as one of those teams.
In my opinion, it’ll take some time for AU to bring in enough elite offensive talent to measure up to the kind of defenses Florida, Alabama, and LSU are capable of throwing at them on a yearly basis.
Time is something they don’t give you at Auburn.
(the booster running the school, that is.)

    By GonzoHog on Jun 21, 2009 @ 10:00am

  130. What about QB news? Has anyone heard anything on a possiable commits?

    By Big Boi on Jun 21, 2009 @ 10:30am

  131. Bobby Lowder is that booster, Gonzo. I think offensively we can match anyone in the country if our OL comes together. I believe the defense is a year away. If we can just stop the run.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 21, 2009 @ 12:29pm

  132. I feel that as BP’s offense continues to develope and starts putting up big numbers, recruits will want to play for him. Especially when large numbers of his players get drafted by the NFL, which will start happening because his offense is very similar to what is generally run in the pros.

    By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jun 21, 2009 @ 3:37pm

  133. SAHF,

I think CBP will have to come out and say when there is a good job that opens up.

I have found my home here at Arkansas and I am planning on retiring here. Then the Big name recruits will consider us. Until then however, Other coaches will us his lack of staying power against him…

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 21, 2009 @ 8:52pm

  134. Well, I hope he does stay a long time. I think he can build a powerhouse right here in little ole Arkansas. I really do.Powerhouses have been built in a lot more unlikely places.

    By SOUTHARKHOGFAN on Jun 21, 2009 @ 9:15pm

  135. like Nebraska. Their recruiting base is worse than ours.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 22, 2009 @ 4:45am

  136. A lot of places have better recruiting bases and alot of places dont have as good of recruiting places as we do. I really think that some of these places in our region that have better recruiting bases but not as good of colleges or campus atmospheres we are starting to make progress and chipping away at their players. Our California Juco relationship is also something very strong I hope we continue to build on. That mammoth of an OL at Seqouias this year would be a huge get just like the 3 we got from there last year.

    By blake on Jun 22, 2009 @ 9:56am

  137. I don’t know of many powerhouses with worse recruiting base than ours save Nebraska.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 22, 2009 @ 10:10am

  138. I am not so much thinking of “powerhouses” but more so teams that have been as or more competitive than we have either historically or as of late.

I agree with Nebraska. Then there are teams like Kansas and Kansas State, Oregon, BYU, Utah, Louisville, Missouri, and in my opinion all of the east coast schools that are so far from all the Southern and West Coast talent.

I understand some of these teams are close to recruiting Hotbeds. But no closer than we are? We have Texas, LA, Okie, TN, and Mizz and Miss right next door and also all of AR. We have it pretty good actually compared to alot of places.

The powerhouses that have great recruiting areas but are in Ugly places you dont have to look very far. Norman, Oklahoma?

    By blake on Jun 22, 2009 @ 10:37am

  139. What about Arizona and Arizona State? Tennessee is tough. Vandy works arounf Nashville and UMem works Memphis. You have Ole Miss, MSU and SoMiss in Mississippi. Iowa and Iowa State compete for Iowa talent. There are a lot of places with multiple colleges but small bases from which to recruit players.

    By bigfoot on Jun 22, 2009 @ 10:39am

  140. Arizona State gets lots of California talent. Tempe is an athlete’s dream town. The school population is almost 50,000 and those girls there are smoking.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 22, 2009 @ 10:49am

  141. You can consider Caifornia as ORegon, Washington, and Arizona’s recruiting base. In 2008 California’s population was 36,756,666 (ranked 1st overall) with only 4 BCS schools there. Washington’s population was 6,549,224 (ranked 13th overall. Arizona’s population was 6,500,180 (ranked 14 overall). BYU has the Mormon religion to pull from. Arkansas is ranked 32nd and has to compete with the 2 BCS schools in Oklahoma and the 4 BCS schools in Texas for talent. we are at a huge disadvatage when it comes to recruiting.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 22, 2009 @ 11:02am

  142. *disadvantage

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 22, 2009 @ 11:02am

  143. ASU (no, not our friends in J’boro) will be somewhat relevant again in football, at least until Erickson gets busted for cheating again. It’s arguable that Tempe has a better recruiting base to pull from, but the major disadvantage IMO is the fan base. Most people in the “Valley of the Sun”, like myself, are from elsewhere. ASU is little more than a passing interest, unless you actually went to college there. And half the native Arizonians went to UA in Tucson, so that splits the fan base too. These Pac 10 guys have no idea what week-in/week-out tough conference football is. Though they do have some smokin’ hot coeds. :)

By AZ Desert Hog on Jun 22, 2009 @ 4:31pm

  144. Nebraska and OU fought over a few of the recruits when they belonged to the Big 8, but not that many.
Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and in the latter years of the old SWC, Houston and SMU were all battling for recruits in Texas.
Back then, the UofA relyed mostly on in-state recruits with a few Texas leftovers to gain try and gain national prominance.

Since then, the circumstances are much different.
Texas and OU have slowly but surely weeded out Nebraska for the majority of bigtime recruits in Texas.
Why? Because speed is the name of the game in this day and age.
Back then, the in-state, corn-feed O-linemen Nebraska produced was enough for a power run game offense like the wishbone to produce bigtime results.
As the pro-style, West Coast, spread, etc… type offenses have taken over in the last 13 years or so, Nebraska has fallen way behind.
The UofA, on the other hand, belongs to a different league now, which just happens to be the best football conference in the land.
If your a top notch recruit in Texas these days, wanting to play in the SEC, LSU and the UofA just happen to be the closest schools to your home. (Mommy and Daddy)
I’d say our recruiting advantage has went up quite a bit since Bobby Petrino arrived on campus.
What can Les Miles do that Bobby Petrino can’t?
    This is only the begining.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 22, 2009 @ 5:52pm

  145. well as of right now les miles has won a national title. that would be what he most likely is selling over the ua. but bp has won league championships. but i agree the big 12 athletes that want to play sec ball close to home would look most likely at ua lsu and also tn.

    By blake on Jun 22, 2009 @ 7:59pm

  146. In texass they believe the big 12 is the best conference.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 22, 2009 @ 8:08pm

  147. Not nessesarily true, MRPRFCT.
When you say “they”, do you mean the coaches and players who already coach and play for those respective Big 12 programs, or are you speaking for all of the bigtime div.1 recruits who are still tying to take visits and decide were they can develope for a professional carrer?
I’m sure they watch ESPN (the SEC channel) just like we do.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 22, 2009 @ 8:40pm

  148. Our parent company is in oklahoma. The folks there believe the big 12 is better. One of our engineers is from oklahoma and believes they are better than us. I imagine many folks in texass feel the same way. I couldn’t imagine those arrogant SOBs admitting another conference is better so I presume their kids feel the same way.

  149. LOL

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 23, 2009 @ 12:31am

By Ron in Jordan on Jun 23, 2009 @ 12:46am

  151. I agree, ron.

    By MRPRFCT on Jun 23, 2009 @ 4:58am

  152. I work with many OU fans as well, MRPRFCT.
Your right, they are arrogant to a point.
From what i’ve listened to, they’ll be the first to say that defense wins championships, but the last to admit that outside of UT and OU, there’s little to be seen in the Big 12.
They seem to jump quikly onto the media bandwagon when it comes to promoting the Big 12 as better than what they really are.
They seem to think that Florida was the only elite team in the SEC last season, playing a bunch of “middle of the pack teams”.
In comparison, I’ll take the two teams playing for the SEC title to the two teams playing for the Big 12 title any day of the week, and as far as Texas Tech being ranked the #2 team in the country after the Texas game goes, that still makes me laugh.
Texas Tech, Oklahoma St., and Missouri all need to discover a little thing called defense.
They were all over-rated early in the season.
As down as Georgia was, compared to their pre-season ranking, they were just as good or better than any of those teams.

    By GonzoHog on Jun 23, 2009 @ 6:58pm
